Gannon Women's Water Polo Team Splits Pair of CWPA Western Division Battles

Sophomore Janelle McDaniels scored six goals during Gannon's Saturday's split at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion.
ERIE, Pa. – Three four-goal periods helped the Gannon women's water polo team gain a split of two Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Western Division matches Saturday at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion with a 12-7 victory against Notre Dame (Ohio). The Lady Knights dropped a 15-4 decision to nationally-ranked Indiana University earlier in the day.

In the nightcap, Gannon scored four times each during the first and second quarters. The scoring output resulted in a 4-1 lead after one quarter and an 8-1 advantage after two periods. Notre Dame rebounded after the break with a 4-0 scoring edge during the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 8-5. However, the Lady Knights iced the win with a 4-2 scoring difference during the final eight minutes.

Janelle McDaniels (Edwardsville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West) led the way with four goals. Shanen Lazenby (Erie, Pa./McDowell) followed with a hat trick of her own. Katelyn Jacobs (Brookfield, Ill./Lyons Township) found the back of the net twice. Rachel Bednarek (Windermere, Fla./Olympia) and Kelsey Rzymek (Erie, Pa./McDowell) completed the scoring with one goal each. Janelle Bartman (Darien, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) recorded 12 saves in goal.

Indiana, ranked 12th nationally and No. 2 in the CWPA Division I/II poll, jumped on Gannon early during the first match with six goals during both first-half quarters. The Hoosiers led 6-1 after one quarter and 12-1 at the intermission. The Lady Knights were able to regroup for a 3-2 scoring advantage during the third period, before Indiana tallied the only score of the fourth frame.

McDaniels was Gannon's leading scorer again with two goals. Jacobs and Gadd also produced scores. Bartman turned away 10 shots between the pipes.

Gannon, ranked 10th in the CWPA Division I/II poll, moved to 7-11 overall and 1-3 in conference play with Saturday's split. Indiana improved to 16-11 overall and 3-1 in the CWPA. Notre Dame, which was among others receiving votes in the CWPA poll, dropped to 5-10 overall and 0-4 in league action. The Lady Knights return to action Monday, April 8 against Grove City at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion. The regular-season home finale is scheduled for 7 p.m.
