No. 2 Gannon Women’s Basketball Takes Ninth Straight in Win at Le Moyne, 74-43

Junior Nettie Blake and the No. 2 Lady Knights captured their ninth-straight win with a 74-43 victory over host Le Moyne Saturday

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - The No. 2 Gannon women's basketball team rolled past the Le Moyne Dolphins, 74-43, at Ted Grant Court in the Henninger Athletic Center on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Knights fired their way to victory, shooting 50 percent from the field compared to Le Moyne's 24.5 percent. The Lady Knights kept their win streak intact, improving to 9-0 on the season. The Dolphins fall to 7-2 overall, snapping a four-game win streak and spoiling an unbeaten record on home court.

Junior Nettie Blake (Jersey City, N.J./Marist) recorded her second straight double-double leading to her fourth of the season off 18 points and 12 rebounds, tying a season high. Senior Kelley Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn./E.O. Smith) reached double digits for the third time this season, registering 12 points along with four assists and two steals. Fellow senior Jen Papich (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) tallied nine points with four steals and two blocks. In her first start of the season in a season-high 23 minutes, junior Mollie Sebald (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Holy Name) scored eight points adding two steals and two assists.

Only one Dolphin managed to reach double digits, as Alex Marple finished with 10 points and a pair of assists. Emily Greer recorded eight points including one assist, block and steal each. Kayla Stroman added five points with five assists and three steals in 38 minutes of play.

The Dolphins came out cold, shooting only 5-for-27 for 18.5 percent. Their struggles extended to the arc as the team pulled up empty, missing 13 first-half opportunities. The Dolphins finished the day shooting 24.5 percent (12-49) from the field and 14.3 percent (3-21) from the arc.

On the other hand, the Lady Knights shot 57.1 percent (16-28) in the opening half including 53.9 percent (7-13) behind the arc. The Lady Knights shot 40.9 percent in the second half to finish the game shooting 50.0 percent on the day.

The Lady Knights controlled the boards, holding a 41-31 advantage. The difference came in each team's defensive zone. The Lady Knights controlled the Dolphins' second chances by a 29-17 edge.

The Lady Knights' 11-0 run to open the game came off five straight by Blake capped by back-to-back threes by junior Brittany Batts (Leesburg, Va./Loudon County) and sophomore Morgan Neighbors (Westerville, Ohio/Westerville South) just 2:44 into the game. After Blake's layup for her seventh point in the opening five points, only one basket would fall in a span of 5:19 until Blake struck again for a Lady Knights' 15-4 lead with 10:42 remaining.

A three by Sundberg with 5:43 left in the half started a Lady Knights' 15-2 run, which was finished with a jumper by the senior for a 41-12 Gannon lead. Facing a 29-point deficit with 1:38 remaining, the Dolphins closed the first-half scoring off three free-throws by Kayla Stroman.

The Lady Knights went right back to work to open the second half with a 9-1 run off four points each by Blake and Papich in the opening 3:27. A three by Sebald in the midst of a Lady Knights' 8-1 run gave her team their widest lead up to that point, leading by 41 points with 12:58 left, 59-18. The rest of the way, the game was balanced. The Dolphins closed the game's scoring in the final 3:49 with a 10-3 run.

Gannon returns to Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action when the team hosts East Division opponents Mansfield and Lock Haven at the Hammermill Center in back-to-back games. As part of PSAC crossover-doubleheaders, the Lady Knights open against Mansfield on Tuesday, Dec. 17, followed by Lock Haven on Wednesday, Dec. 18. Both games begin at 5:30 p.m.
