ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's and men's swim teams conclude their 2012-13 home schedule Saturday, January 12 against NCAA Division I Canisius at the Carneval Athletic Pavilion. The dual meet is scheduled for 11 a.m.
The Gannon women's team enters the weekend with a 6-6 record in dual meets, but hasn't competed in a dual meet since traveling to Fredonia State a little over a month ago. The Lady Knights did compete in the New Year's Largo Relay Invitational during their Winter Training in Largo, Florida the first week of January, but no team scores were kept.
Katie Joseph (McDonald, Ohio/McDonald) leads the Gannon women's team into action with nine individual titles this season.
Morgan Lydic (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls),
Katie Vincent (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus) and
Kelsey Williams (Danville, Pa./Danville Area) have eight first-place finishes each.
The women's team has recorded 148 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying times and 15 NCAA “B” cut times this season. The Lady Knights have also met NCAA “B” cut standards in the 200-yard freestyle, the 800-yard freestyle, the 200-yard medley and the 400-yard medley relay events.
The Gannon men's team brings a 6-4 dual-meet record into Saturday's match-up, winning its last two dual meets against Fredonia State (120.5-110.5) and Penn State Behrend (146-134). Much like the women's team, the Golden Knights competed in the non-scored New Year's Largo Relay Invitational and hasn't competed in a dual meet since December 7.
Adam Chrzanowski (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep),
Ethan Chase (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and
Mike Lawrence (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario/Notre-Dame-des-Grands-Lacs) headline the attack with seven individual gold medals this season.
Nick Wolhaupter (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) and
Ryan Carter (Yorktown, Va./Grafton) have five titles each.
The men's team has recorded 172 PSAC-qualifying times and one NCAA “B” cut time this season. Chrzanowski posted the NCAA “B” cut time in the 200-yard freestyle at the Wooster Invitational.
Canisius comes to Erie, Pa., with a 4-5 women's record and a 4-4 men's slate in dual meets. The Golden Griffins swept SUNY Geneseo during their last action on December 8. Both teams produced identical 136-97 victories on Senior Day.
The Canisius swimming and diving teams secured three of the four Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) weekly honors after the SUNY Geneseo meet. The Golden Griffin men swept the pair of weekly awards with senior Shawn Parkhurst named Men's Swimmer of the Week and sophomore Eddie Quarantillo receiving Men's Diver of the Week honors. For the Golden Griffin women, freshman Audrey Mulhisen secured the top spot as Women's Diver of the Week.
It marked the first time a Griffin had received a weekly honor under head coach Scott Vanderzell. On the men's side, the selection of Parkhurst and Quarantillo is the first in either category for the Griffs in program history. Mulhisen's selection marks the first time a Griffin female diver has received a conference weekly selection since Kaeli Abdo on January 21, 2008.
Gannon split with Canisius last season in the Golden Griffins' pool. The Gannon women earned a 59-54 victory while the men dropped a 148-86 decision.
