Gannon Women's Soccer Team Hosts Lake Erie and Ashland During Gannon Labor Day Tournament

The Gannon women's soccer team opens the 2012 season with a pair of matches at Gannon University Field this weekend.
ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women's soccer team will welcome a total of five teams to Gannon University Field this weekend during the Gannon University Labor Day Tournament. The Lady Knights will face off with two of those foes, opening the 2012 season against Lake Erie on Thursday, August 30 at 1p.m. before facing Ashland Friday, August 31st at 4 p.m.

Thursday, August 30th
    1 p.m. - Gannon vs. Lake Erie
Friday, August 31st
    4 p.m. - Gannon vs. Ashland
Saturday, September 1
    11:30 a.m. - Edinboro vs. Lake Erie
    2:30 p.m. - Mercyhurst vs. Notre Dame (Ohio)

  • The Lady Knights will play the season opener at home for the fifth straight year, having last opened on the road in 2007 at Tiffin.
  • Gannon is undefeated in the last four season openers, out-scoring opponents 12-3. 
  • Gannon earned the seventh seed in the 2011 PSAC Tournament, eventually falling to Kutztown in the quarterfinals.
  • The program has produced a winning record three times during the last four seasons, posting at least nine victories in each of those campaigns

  • The Storm are led by form Gannon soccer star Jamie Shadd-Matson. In 2006, she was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-Region team and All-GLIAC Second Team after scoring 12 goals, including four game-winners, and 26 points to lead the Lady Knights.
  • Lake Erie will face off with a total of four schools hailing from Pennsylvania this season including three PSAC foes in Gannon, Mercyhurst and Edinboro. The tour is completed by future PSAC member Seton Hill.
  • This will be the first meeting between the Lake Erie and Gannon

  • Gannon will face off with Ashland for the second-straight season after earning an early-season 1-0 win over the Eagles in 2011. Michelle Genetin assisted on the game-winning goal in the 79th minute for the Lady Knights.
  • Head Coach Glenn Francis is no stranger to the Erie area, having played at rival Mercyhurst, graduating in 1997.
  • The Eagles hold an 11-3 all-time record against Gannon with the majority of those meetings coming while the two schools were both members of the GLIAC. During that time Ashland won eight straight GLIAC women's soccer times from 1997-2004.
