ANAHEIM, Calif. – The top-ranked Ashland women's basketball team rattled off the first 12 points during a game-opening 15-2 run and held off No. 15 Gannon 70-59 Saturday afternoon during the second day of the prestigious Disney Tip-Off Classic in Anaheim, California.
It marked the second consecutive day Gannon participated in a battle of nationally-ranked teams. The Lady Knights defeated No. 8 UC San Diego Friday during the opening night of the classic.
Gannon was never able to fully recover from a start that left the Lady Knights in a 15-2 hole. Following an Alyssa Miller jumper, University of Dayton transfer Kari Daugherty scored 10 consecutive points to give Ashland a 12-0 lead.
Candice Hendricks (Randallstown, Md./McDonogh) momentarily stopped the run with Gannon's first points 7:56 into the contest, before Lindsey Tenyak's three-pointer gave the Lady Eagles a 15-2 edge with 11:55 showing on the clock.
Head coach
Cleve Wright's squad climbed within 21-14 after back-to-back triples from
Brittany Batts (Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) and
Kelley Sundberg (Mansfield, Conn./E.O. Smith). But the 2012 NCAA Division II national runner-up answered with another Tenyak three-pointer and a Daugherty lay-up to bump the lead back to 26-14 with 5:23 left in the first half. The Eagles eventually went to the intermission with a 32-19 advantage.
Ashland grabbed its largest lead of the afternoon at 49-31 following an 11-2 run midway through the second half. Gannon tried to rally, cutting the deficit to single digits in the final minutes. The Lady Knights drained three consecutive shots, including a three-pointer from
Mollie Sebald (Broadview Heights, Ohio/Holy Name). The long-range bomb cut the deficit to 66-59 with 31 seconds remaining. However, the nation's No. 1 team hit four free throws during the final 28 seconds to secure a 70-59 victory.
Sebald and Sundberg were the only Lady Knights able to reach double digits in scoring, netting 11 points each.
Nettie Blake (Jersey City, N.J./Marist) and
Doriyon Glass (Boardman, Ohio/Boardman) added nine points apiece.
Gannon shot 40 percent (22-55) from the field, 42.1 percent (8-19) from three-point range and 70 percent (7-10) from the free throw line.
Daugherty was dominant for Ashland, recording an impressive double-double with 29 points and 19 rebounds in 38 minutes. The senior forward went 11-of-18 from the field and 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Miller chipped in 12 points.
Ashland shot 45.6 percent (26-57) from the floor, 45.5 percent (5-11) from behind the arc and 92.9 percent (13-14) from the charity stripe.
Gannon evened its record at 1-1 with Saturday's setback. Ashland remained perfect at 2-0. The Lady Knights conclude play at the Disney Tip-Off Classic Sunday, November 11 against West Texas A&M. The Lady Buffs were among others receiving votes in the USA Today Sports/ESPN Preseason Coaches Poll.
