ASHLAND, Ohio - The Gannon men's soccer season saw their nine-match winning streak to open the 2012 season snapped Thursday evening as Ashland spoiled the Golden Knights perfect record with a 3-1 victory.
The Golden Knights were able to hold a 1-0 lead at the half only to see the Eagles answer with three second-half goals. Gannon held an 11-4 edge in shots the first 45 minutes, but Ashland took control during the second half, using a 13-4 edge in shots to convert on three scoring opportunities.
Gannon took a 1-0 lead with just four minutes left in the first half thanks to a goal from
Sean Pike (Liverpool, England / Range).
Adam Sharbaugh (Sarver, Pa. / Knoch) was credited with the assist.
The lead lasted fifteen minutes into the second half before Ashland netted the equalizer. Guilherme Karaoglan found the back of the goal following a crossing pass from Keiichi Nguyen.
The Eagles took the lead just four minutes later with a score from Eric Ashley into the top right corner of the goal. Andrew Over added the insurance goal in the 73rd minute. Nguyen assisted on both scores for the Eagles.
The second-half edge in shots helped Ashland hold a 19-15 advantage in the match. Gannon's
Jason Barbarino (Pittsburgh, Pa. / Plum Senior) made five stops in goal while Justin Nolan turned away three shots for the Eagles.
Ashland is ranked sixth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Midwest regional rankings. Suffering their first loss of the season, Gannon fell to 9-1 overall. Ashland improved to 7-2-1.
