Lear's 4-3 Upset Gives Head Coach Don Henry 150 Career Dual Wins as Gannon Wrestling Team Defeats Ashland 22-18

Head coach Don Henry notched his 150th career dual win when Gannon defeated Ashland 22-18.
ASHLAND, Ohio - Head Coach Don Henry reached a milestone Friday night as the Golden Knights' 22-18 win over Ashland gave the 28-year head coach his 150th dual win. 

Ashland jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the 125-pound bout thanks to a major decision. However, Gannon would quickly make the score 12-4 with pins at 133 and 141. Adam Weinell (Blairsville, Pa. / Blairsville) pinned Adli Edwards in 6:24 for his team-leading fourth pin of the season. Scott Bulzan (Chardon, Ohio / Chardon) followed up with his second pin of the season in 3:53 against Jake Garringer.

Ethan Swope (Luthersburg, Pa. / DuBois Area) added to the lead with a 7-5 overtime win over Marc Hoff. However, the Eagles battled back to win the next three bouts, tying the score at 15.

Zack Zelcs (Ridgway, Pa. / Ridgway) added bonus points at 184 for Gannon with a 8-0 major decision against Kurt Shaefer, giving Gannon a 19-15 lead. Joe Brandt brought the Eagles within one with a 4-2 overtime victory at 197 pounds. 

With Gannon holding a 19-18 lead, the match was decided by the heavyweight bout. Chaz Lear's (Cape May, N.J. / Lower Cape May Regional) 4-3 win over Jacob Southwick gave the Golden Knights a 22-18 win. Southwick, who finished fourth at NCAA Division II Nationals last season, entered the night ranked third in the country and had not lost to a Division II foe this season. 

Gannon improved to 2-0 in dual meet action this season while Ashland suffered a setback in their first dual meet of the season.

The Golden Knights will travel back to Ashland for their next action, competing in the Mid-Atlantic Duals on Sunday, January 15.
