BUFFALO, N.Y. – The Gannon women's swimming and diving team won three races and used its depth during all events to sweep a pair of NCAA Division I programs at the Canisius Tri-Meet Saturday afternoon. The Lady Knights earned the sweep with a 59-54 victory against Canisius and a 60-45 verdict against Siena. Meanwhile, the men's squad dropped a 148-86 decision to Canisius during its lone match-up of the day.
The women's 200-yard medley relay team opened the day with a victory, nipping the Canisius team by less than a second. Gannon's foursome of Rachel King (Rochester, N.Y./Greece Athena), Katie Vincent (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus), Amanda Knapp (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg) and
Kaitlyn Bosy (Courtice, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary) out-raced the competition in one minute and 53.12 seconds.
Gannon also received championship performances in the 200-yard breaststroke and the 100-yard freestyle. Vincent became a double-winner with a gold medal in the 200-yard breaststroke, winning the event with a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) qualifying time of two minutes and 28.12 seconds. In addition, the performance set a Canisius pool record.
Joseph touched the wall first in the 100-yard freestyle, meeting conference standards in 54.81 seconds. The freshman has won five consecutive 100-yard freestyle races and six of seven this season. She also added a PSAC-qualifying time in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing third with a time of one minute and 58.48 seconds.
Steph Graham (Wexford, Pa./North Allegheny) recorded Gannon's fourth conference-qualifying time in the 200-yard butterfly. The sophomore did so while securing a bronze medal in two minutes and 16.87 seconds.
On the men's side, Gannon also won three events and recorded three PSAC-qualifying times during a single match-up against Canisius.
Adam Chrzanowski (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) was Gannon's lone double-winner. The freshman picked up an individual title in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of four minutes and 56.40 seconds.
Chrzanowski then swam the third leg for the 400-yard freestyle relay team that concluded the day's action with a victory. He joined
Ethan Chase (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep),
Alex Dovale (Cape Town, South Africa/South African College) and
Nick Wolhaupter (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) to finish in three minutes and 15.07 seconds.
Jared Griffard (Coeur d'Alene, Idaho/Coeur d'Alene) captured Gannon's third title in the 200-yard breaststroke with a conference-qualifying time of two minutes and 14.28 seconds.
Chase and Dovale met conference standards during top-four finishes in the 200-yard butterfly. Chase secured a bronze medal with a time of two minutes and 0.35 seconds while Dovale placed fourth with a time of two minutes and 2.2 seconds.
The Gannon women's team improved to 10-3 with its fourth consecutive victory, reaching the 10-win plateau for the first time since the 2007-08 campaign. The men's squad saw its record even at 5-5. Both teams return to action Saturday, January 21 at the Clarion Tri-Meet which features Gannon, Clarion and Edinboro.
