Gannon Women's Soccer Team Caps Perfect Classic with Late Victory; Sharbaugh Sets School Record for Career Points

Senior Amanda Sharbaugh is now Gannon's all-time leader in career goals (37) and points (92).
ERIE, Pa. - Two days after breaking Gannon's all-time scoring record, Amanda Sharbaugh (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) had more tricks left in her bag. The senior forward tapped a crossing pass into the goal with 10:48 remaining in regulation, helping the Lady Knights cap a perfect weekend Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 victory against former Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Ashland.

Action during the final day of the Gannon University Classic sponsored by Scott Enterprises was contested in sweltering heat with temperatures reaching 90 degrees at Gannon University Field. In the final match of the classic, Edinboro scored four goals in the second half and rolled to a 4-1 victory against Wheeling Jesuit. Both Gannon and Edinboro finished the classic with spotless 2-0 records while Ashland and Wheeling Jesuit were winless in two matches.

Saturday's Gannon-Ashland affair was played on even terms throughout much of the afternoon. The Lady Knights out-shot the Eagles 8-5 in the first half, but the visitors had the best scoring chance when Lexi Gruich headed a corner kick off the crossbar in the 20th minute.

Gannon used a turnover and a great run to produce the only goal of the match in the 80th minute. Andrea Eisenhart (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) caused an Ashland turnover at midfield with a great sliding tackle. The ball bounced loose and the Lady Knights came back down the right side. Michelle Genetin (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) dribbled into the box, before passing the ball across the front of the net.

Sharbaugh then redirected the cross into the left corner of the net with 10:48 left in regulation. Genetin was credited with her first career assist on the play.

Sharbaugh became Gannon's all-time leader in career points with the goal which gave her 92 career points, surpassing Erin Cray's (1997-00) previous record of 90. Currently the school's all-time leader in goals (37) and points, Sharbaugh now needs six assists to own all three major scoring records at Gannon.

The score seemed to take the steam out of Ashland in the scorching heat. Ashland managed only one shot during the final 10 minutes as Maggie Brinkman (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence) stopped Melissa Hill in the 83rd minute.

Gannon held a slight 12-10 edge in shots while Ashland had a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks. Brinkman recorded her first career shutout with a career-high eight saves. Rebecca Plescia turned away five shots in goal for the Eagles.

Head coach Colin Petersen's squad improved to 2-0 for the first time since the 2008 season when the Lady Knights opened the campaign with three consecutive victories. Ashland dropped to 0-2. Gannon returns to action Friday, September 9 against Mansfield at Gannon University Field. The Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opener is slated for 6:30 p.m.
