Gannon Women's Soccer Team Stays Red Hot at Home With 1-0 Shutout Against East Stroudsburg; Post-Game Interviews Available Online

Senior Amanda Sharbaugh needs one more goal to tie the school's single-season record of 15.

ERIE, Pa. – There has been no place like home for the Gannon women's soccer team. Amanda Sharbaugh's (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) NCAA Division II best 14th goal propelled the Lady Knights to a 1-0 shutout against East Stroudsburg Saturday afternoon at Gannon University Field.

The victory moved Gannon's home record to 6-1-1 this season. The Lady Knights are 3-0-1 in their last four matches at Gannon University Field.

Saturday's only goal came with 5:37 left in the first half. Sharbaugh took a long pass from Ashley Oluschak (Butler, Pa./Butler) on the left side. The senior dribbled a little further, but turning and taking aim with a left-footed shot. The attempt from 25 yards out was perfectly placed over the East Stroudsburg goalkeeper Nicki Keiser's head and into the upper right corner.

Sharbaugh now has 14 goals and 30 points this season, needing one goal to tie Gannon's single-season record shared by her (2008) and Erin Cray (1999). She entered the week No. 1 among all NCAA Division II players in both categories.

Gannon had a chance to extend its lead early in the second half, but East Stroudsburg's second goalkeeper of the afternoon Brittain Wagner made a sliding stop on Michelle Genetin (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) 2:39 into the half.

It was one of many opportunities in the second half as Gannon out-shot East Stroudsburg 10-4 in the final 45 minutes. In fact, the Lady Knights took the first 10 shots of the half. Wagner had to turn away a pair of shots in the first three minutes and was a big reason why Gannon was unable to add an insurance goal.

East Stroudsburg tried to rally late, getting all four of its second-half shots off in the final 11 minutes. Three of the four shots were not on goal and Maggie Brinkman (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence) stopped a Kerri McClay header with eight minutes remaining. The visitor's last chance came in the final minute, but Bridget Connell's shot with seven seconds left sailed high.

Gannon out-shot East Stroudsburg 18-8, but the Warriors held a slight 2-1 edge in corner kicks. Brinkman needed only two saves to record her third shutout of the season. Two ESU goalkeepers combined to record eight saves.

Head coach Colin Petersen's squad improved to 6-3-3 overall and 4-3-3 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) while running its current unbeaten streak to three matches. East Stroudsburg dropped to 4-7-1 overall and 1-7-1 in conference play. The Lady Knights begin a four-match road swing Monday, October 10 at Malone. The non-conference contest is scheduled for 4 p.m.
