Gannon Women's Soccer Team Battles to Scoreless Tie; Posts Second Shutout of the Season

Senior Maggie Brinkman posted her second shutout of the season during Wednesday's scoreless tie.
BLOOMSBURG, Pa. – The Gannon women's soccer team drove nearly 300 miles, but wasn't able to settle anything Wednesday afternoon in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) match-up at Bloomsburg. Neither club was able to pick up three points and settled for a 0-0 double-overtime tie.

The scoreless deadlock was Gannon's first since playing West Virginia Wesleyan to a 0-0 tie September 6, 2010 at Gannon University Field. In the process, the Lady Knights posted their second shutout of the season. The squad defeated Ashland 1-0 September 3 at Gannon University Field.

Wednesday's tie also did little to separate the two programs. Bloomsburg remained in seventh place in the PSAC with 13 points. Gannon sits close behind in eighth place with 12 points. The top eight teams will qualify for the PSAC post-season tournament at the end of the regular season.

Bloomsburg held a slight advantage during regulation while Gannon had a slight upper hand during the overtime periods. The Huskies out-shot the Lady Knights 6-3 in the first half and 4-2 in the second half.

The home squad had a couple scoring chances early, but Jamie Vaniver hit the post in the 16th minute. Maggie Brinkman (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence) then made a save on Caroline Mountney a little over three minutes later.

Gannon answered with some pressure later in the half. However, Bloomsburg goalkeeper Frances Nicoletti stopped shots from Michelle Genetin (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) in the 25th minute and Justine Rodrigues (Georgetown, Ontario/Georgetown District) in the 31st minute.

Niether goalkeeper needed to make a save in the second half as all six combined shots were not put on goal.

Both teams had a chance to score the golden goal in the first overtime session. Kara Prokopchak (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) fired a shot towards goal 32 seconds into the period, but Nicoletti made the save. Amanda Sharbaugh (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) then drilled a shot off the post with 2:01 left in the period. Bloomsburg produced the final opportunity of the period, but Brinkman turned away a Katie Walczuk attempt with 14 seconds left.

Gannon took two shots in the first five minutes of the second overtime period, but the first went wide and Nicoletti stopped the second. Bloomsburg's only shot of the session sailed wide in the 116th minute.

Bloomsburg out-shot Gannon 13-10 and held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks. The Huskies were called offsides 10 times compared to Lady Knights being called once. Brinkman needed only three saves to preserve her second shutout of the season. Nicoletti had four saves for the Huskies.

Gannon, ranked ninth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Atlantic regional rankings, moved to 5-3-3 overall and 3-3-3 in the PSAC. Bloomsburg is now 5-4-1 overall and 4-3-1 in conference play. The Lady Knights return to action Saturday, October 8 against East Stroudsburg at Gannon University Field. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
