Gannon Women's Soccer Team to Clash with Kutztown in Tuesday's PSAC Quarterfinals; Postseason Match Moved to West Chester

Freshman Michelle Genetin and the Lady Knights hope for more celebrations during Tuesday's PSAC Quarterfinals.
ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon women's soccer team hopes the third time is the charm as the squad makes its third venture into the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Postseason Tournament during four seasons as a member of the conference.

Gannon will face Kutztown Tuesday, November 1 in the PSAC Quarterfinals. The contest was originally scheduled to be hosted by Kutztown, but poor field conditions have forced league officials to move the match-up to West Chester University. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m. There will be no live gameday statistics, video or audio available for Tuesday's postseason battle.

Head coach Colin Petersen's squad will be looking for its first postseason victory as a PSAC member, suffering quarterfinal setbacks against Indiana (Pa.) (1-0) in 2008 and California (Pa.) (2-0) in 2009. The Lady Knights missed the postseason for the first time last year.

Gannon enters the PSAC Tournament as the seventh seed after concluding the regular season with a 9-4-4 overall record and 6-4-4 conference mark following a 5-0 shutout of rival Mercyhurst Saturday afternoon. A victory Tuesday afternoon would push the Lady Knights into double digits in victories for the third time in the last four seasons. The squad concluded the regular season with a 5-1-2 record during its last eight matches.

Amanda Sharbaugh (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) leads the Gannon offensive unit with 17 goals, five assists and 39 points. The senior forward was named PSAC Player of the Week after recording two goals, one assist and five points during last Saturday's victory against Mercyhurst. She broke Gannon's single-season record for points (39) while assuming sole possession of the school's single-season record for goals (17) during that match. In the process, Sharbaugh added to her school career records for goals (51) and points (124). Her 22nd career assist on Gannon's first goal against Mercyhurst brought her within one of Courtney Rowan's (2005-08) school record.

Justine Rodrigues (Georgetown, Ontario/Georgetown District) and Michelle Genetin (Navarre, Ohio/Perry) have scored five and three goals, respectively. Maggie Brinkman (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence) has played every minute in goal, producing a 1.22 goals against average and .776 save percentage.

Kutztown is the PSAC's second seed with a 14-4 overall record and 11-3 conference slate. The Golden Bears are among others receiving votes in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national rankings. The program won its last three regular-season matches by a combined score of 8-1.

Junior Maria Borland is the key to the Kutztown offense with 13 goals, one assist and 27 points. Senior Carolynne Kahl and sophomore Janine Valerio have added five goals each. Sophomore Casey Behrendt has played all but 45 minutes this season in goal, owning a 0.68 goals against average and .797 save percentage. She ranks fourth among PSAC goalkeepers in goals against average.

The winner of Tuesday's quarterfinal match will play the West Chester-Slippery Rock winner in the PSAC semifinals on Friday, November 4. The PSAC championship match is slated for Saturday, November 5. The highest seed remaining after the quarterfinals will host the PSAC Final Four.

The Gannon-Kutztown quarterfinal match also has regional implications. Kutztown was ranked second in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings released last Wednesday. Gannon was tabbed eighth in those same rankings. The PSAC and West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) champions receive automatic bids to the NCAA Division II Tournament. The top four remaining teams in the final regional rankings will receive at-large bids while the top two teams in the region will serve as sub-regional hosts.

Kutztown leads the all-time series against Gannon 3-1, including a 4-1 victory at Gannon University Field on September 10.
