Two Late Goals Propel Shippensburg Over Gannon Men's Soccer Team

Sean Washek fired seven shots, with one hitting the crossbar, during Gannon's 2-0 loss to Shippensburg.

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's soccer team suffered another set back in conference action on Saturday evening as the Golden Knights fell to Shippensburg by a 2-0 final score.

Despite out-shooting Shippensburg 18-11 in the match, the Red Raiders made two shots late in the match count. Shippensburg scored goals one minute and six seconds apart during the 76th and 77th minutes.

Neither team fired off a shot during the first 13 minutes of the match as the two teams battled defensively. Alex Supplee would make the first shot of the game at the 13:41 mark with the ball sailing wide. It would represent the only shot of the half for the Red Raiders.

Gannon's best scoring opportunity in the first half came on a shot from Robbie Bennett (Durban, South Africa / St. Benedict School). However, Shippensburg's Andrew Foran came up with the save, leaving the score tied at one heading into the break.

The offensive tempo picked up in the second half as two teams would combine for 24 shots after recording just five during the first 45 minutes of the match.

In the 66th minute, Jonathan Simmons (Etobicoke, Ontario / St. Michael's College) fired a ball towards the top right corner of the goal, but Foran managed to punch the ball away from the goal, preventing the Gannon score.

Shippensburg nearly scored in the 72nd minute after Chrissy Black beat the Gannon goalkeeper and looked poised to give the Red Raiders a 1-0 lead. However, Marnix van der Donk (The Hague, Netherlands / Maerlant Lyceum) deflected the ball away from the goal at the last second.

Shippensburg would dent the scoreboard four minutes later as Derrick Roy scored his first goal of the season. Oli Templeton recorded the assist. Shippensburg would strike again just over a minute later. After Michael Kickel (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep) stopped Black's original shot, he was unable to cover up the deflection as Black gave Shippensburg a 2-0 lead.

The Golden Knights fired off two shots during the final two minutes of the match, but one would sail high while Foran would make as save on the other. Sean Washek (Fairview, Pa. / Cathedral Prep) lead Gannon with seven shots. Kickel recorded seven saves in goal, all coming in the second half.

The loss moved Gannon to a 4-6-1 overall record with 0-3-0 record in conference matches. The Red Raiders now stand at 3-4-1 overall with a 2-3-1 record in conference matches.

The Golden Knights next face Bloomsburg on the road on Wednesday, October 5. Match time is set for 2 p.m.
