Francique's Late Goal Lifts Gannon Women's Soccer Team Over No. 13 Bloomsburg

Junior Andrea Eisenhart scores past a diving Bloomsburg goalkeeper for Wednesday's first score.
ERIE, Pa. - Tenyka Francique's (Brampton, Ontario/International) goal with 6:24 left in regulation propelled the Gannon women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory against 13th-ranked Bloomsburg Wednesday night at Gannon University Field.

It was a much needed victory for Gannon, which was 0-4-1 in its previous five matches this season and 1-7 lifetime against the Huskies. Bloomsburg entered the contest 13th in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Top 25 and second in the NSCAA Atlantic regional rankings.

Gannon drew first blood on Andrea Eisenhart's (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local) first goal of the season and third of her career. The junior took a crossing pass from Lexie Mastro (Mars, Pa./Mars Area) and scored into the right side of the net with 12:45 left in the first half. The Lady Knights eventually went to halftime with a 1-0 lead after out-shooting the Huskies 7-2 in the first 45 minutes.

Bloomsburg needed very little time to draw even after the break. Katie Walczuk redirected a corner kick from Natalie Adams into the net 4:36 into the second half to tie the affair at one.

Gannon had several chances to score the go-ahead goal and finally did in the 84th minute. Amanda Sharbaugh (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) started the play by quickly inbounding a ball on the left sideline after the Huskies kicked it out. The pass got by a Bloomsburg defender, creating a one-on-one with Francique and the BU goalkeeper. The sophomore forward calmly beat the netminder for the game-winner. It was her second goal of the campaign.

Bloomsburg managed one more shot on goal during the final minutes, but Sabrina Chirco (Brampton, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) turned away Kelsey Holtz's shot with 4:11 remaining.

The entire match was played on even terms as Gannon held slight advantages in shots (16-10) and corner kicks (3-1). Chirco recorded eight saves in the victory. In the process, the senior picked up her 24th career win and tied Kerri Shaughnessy for the school record.

Gannon improved to 3-4-2 overall and 2-4-1 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with Wednesday's victory. Bloomsburg suffered its first defeat, falling to 5-1-1 overall and 4-1 in conference play. The Lady Knights return to action Saturday, October 2 at East Stroudsburg. Game time is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
