ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon men's soccer team stretched its win streak to eight games Wednesday at Gannon University Field. The Golden Knights defeated Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) opponent Bloomsburg by a 3-0 score.
The win streak is the longest for Gannon since winning eight straight games to close out the 1999 season. The Golden Knights have scored at least three goals in each of the eight wins, out-scoring opponents 29-6 in total. Gannon is currently ranked 17th in the country and third in the Atlantic regional rankings.
Gannon got on the board first in the 35th minute after
Sean Washek (Fairview, Pa. / Cathedral Prep) passed the ball to the middle of the field and
Afrim Latifi (Erie, Pa / Cathedral Prep) fired it past the Huskies keeper for the only goal of the first half. Gannon out-shot Bloomsburg 12-3 in the first half.
After two Bloomsburg shots early in the second half, Gannon was able to control play, leading two a pair of second half goals.
Eleven minutes in the Golden Knights took advantage of a Bloomsburg foul when
Evan Chate (Vendays-Montalivet, France / Odilon Redon) took the free kick and snuck the ball past the Bloomsburg keeper.
Gannon's third goal of the night came in the 82nd minute after Latifi took an
Austin Miller (Hilliard, Ohio / Hilliard Darby) pass and picked up his second goal of the night.
In total Gannon out-shot Bloomsburg 22-9 and held and 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Michael Kickel (Erie, Pa. / Cathedral Prep) earned his third shutout of the season, recording three saves on the night.
Latifi, who is tied for seventh in the country in total points, now has 21 on the season and is tied for 10th on Gannon's career points list with 88.
The Golden Knights improve to 8-1 on the season and remain undefeated in PSAC play at 3-0. Bloomsburg is now 3-4 on the season and 1-2 in conference matches.
Gannon will face a tough road test on Saturday, October 2 when they face off against East Stroudsburg at noon. The Warriors are currently ranked fourth in the region.
