ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women's soccer team out-shot Clarion 19-5, but the Golden Eagles scored on their first two shots en route to a 2-0 victory Saturday afternoon in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at Gannon University Field.
Three days after defeating Mercyhurst 1-0 while being out-shot 12-2, Clarion scored on its first shot 2:31 into the contest. Amanda Lewis dribbled past a Gannon defender and netted her third goal of the season into the left side of the net.
Gannon dominated the next 24 minutes, taking four shots and two corner kicks. However, the Lady Knights were unable to dent the scoreboard.
Opportunistic Clarion didn't get a second shot off until the 27th minute when Bethany Naugle got behind the defense and beat the Gannon goalkeeper to the left for a 2-0 advantage.
The remainder of the first half was played on even terms as Clarion went to the intermission with a two-goal advantage. Gannon held slight advantages in shots (6-4) and corner kicks (4-1) during the first 45 minutes.
Head coach
Colin Petersen's squad dominated the second half, out-shooting Clarion 13-1. However, Clarion goalkeeper Jenna Kulik recorded six of her nine saves during the final 45 minutes to record the shutout. The Lady Knights out-shot the Golden Eagles 19-5 overall and had a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Gannon dropped to 2-4-2 overall and 1-4-1 in the PSAC while watching its winless streak extend to five matches. Clarion improved to 3-3-1 overall and 3-1 in conference play with its second consecutive victory. The Lady Knights return to action Wednesday, September 29 against Bloomsburg at Gannon University Field. The Huskies were among others receiving votes in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association (NSCAA) national poll and ranked fourth in the latest NSCAA Atlantic regional rankings. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
