Gannon Women's Soccer Team Ties Edinboro in Rivalry Match-Up; Chirco Records Career-High 17 Saves

Senior Sabrina Chirco's career-high 17 saves helped keep Edinboro at bay during Wednesday's 2-2 tie.
EDINBORO, Pa. - The Gannon women's soccer team seemed to have the match wrapped up, but Edinboro rallied with two goals in the final 5:55 of regulation as the two rivals settled for a 2-2 tie Wednesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action at Sox Harrison Stadium.

The first half was played on even terms based on the number of shots, but it was Gannon which produced the best scoring chances in the first 45 minutes. The Lady Knights wasted little time getting on the scoreboard, forging ahead 1-0 on Ashley Oluschak's (Butler, Pa./Butler) first goal of the season 5:48 into the match. The sophomore took a failed clearing pass and rifled the ball into the lower, left corner of the net.

Sarah Deck (Hamilton, Ontario/Bishop Ryan Catholic S.S.) increased the advantage to 2-0 with her second goal of the season in the 29th minute. The sophomore headed a pass from Erin Resosky (Mars, Pa./Mars Area) into the top, right corner for the score.

The two teams appeared to play on even terms for the next 45 minutes, before Edinboro started to turn up the heat in the final 15 minutes of regulation. The pressure finally paid off in the 85th minute when Karisa Fernandez tallied her sixth goal of the campaign, cutting the deficit in half.

Rachel Dahlstrand then tied the contest with three minutes left in regulation, scoring from six yards out off a throw-in from Cassee Kiplinger. Neither team managed a shot in the final three minutes, before the two teams went to overtime.

Edinboro came close to winning the match several times during the first overtime, but couldn't score the deciding goal. Kiplinger hit the crossbar 2:39 into the session. Jenna Madison then hit the crossbar again with 1:56 left in the period.

In addition, Gannon goalkeeper Sabrina Chirco (Brampton, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) needed two saves during an overtime session that saw Edinboro own a 6-1 edge in shots.

Edinboro out-shot Gannon 5-2 during the second overtime period. Chirco was forced to make two more saves, including one in the final minute of play. The Lady Knights managed one last shot with seven seconds left, but the ball sailed wide and the two rivals were forced to settle for a 2-2 tie.

In all, Edinboro out-shot Gannon 36-23. Both teams took six corner kicks. Chirco made a career-high 17 saves during the stalemate, turning away five more shots than her previous career-high. Kate Stukbauer recorded six saves for the Fighting Scots.

Gannon moved to 2-3-2 overall and 1-3-1 in the PSAC with Wednesday's tie. Edinboro, ranked sixth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Atlantic regional rankings, moved to 5-1-1 overall and 2-1-1 in conference play. The Lady Knights return to action Saturday, September 25 against Clarion at Gannon University Field. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
