Gannon Men's Soccer Returns Home to Host California (Pa.) Wednesday Evening

ERIE, Pa. - After a road win over Alderson-Broaddus this weekend, the Gannon men's soccer team returns home Wednesday, September 15 to open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play against California (Pa.). The men's game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. following the conclusion of the women's game which starts at 4:00 p.m.

Gannon enters Wednesday's match with a 3-1-0 overall record having won three straight matches after dropping its season opener to Bloomfield. Gannon has picked up a wins against New York Institute of Technology, West Virginia Wesleyan and Alderson-Broaddus. 

Adam Sharbaugh (Sarver, Pa. / Knoch) has gotten off to a strong start in 2010 recording four of the 12 Golden Knight goals this season and is tied with a team-high eight points. Also racking up eight points this season is Afrim Latifi (Erie, Pa / Cathedral Prep). Latifi has two goals and four assists on the season, recording a point in each of Gannon's victories this season. Goalkeeper Michael Kickel (Erie, Pa / Cathedral Prep) has 19 saves this season, posting one shutout. In his four starts he has posted a 1.25 goals against average and a .792 save percentage. 

The Vulcans come into the game with a 2-0-1 mark on the season. California opened conference play last weekend battling to a 0-0 double-overtime tie against Mercyhurst. Goals have been hard to come by so far for the Vulcans, collecting just three in four games. Russell Bootwright leads the team in points (3) with one goal and one assist. Goalkeeper Derek Yobbi has yet to allow a goal this season, collecting 10 saves in three shutouts. 

Gannon and California do have a common win on the schedule having both handed a loss to Alderson-Broaddus. Gannon's win came by a score of 3-1 while California posted a 3-0 shutout. 

In the most recent National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) poll the Vulcans were voted fifth in the region, while Gannon enters the poll at seventh.
