ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women's soccer team scored three goals for the first time since the third match of the season and snapped a five-match winless streak with a 3-2 victory against Millersville Friday night at a chilly Gannon University Field.
It appeared like Gannon would cruise to an easy victory after scoring back-to-back goals in the span of one minute and 32 seconds during the first half.
Erin Resosky (Mars, Pa./Mars Area) began the scoring with her first career goal at the 27:22 mark. The true freshman completed a series of passes from
Jordan Rickan (Kenmore, N.Y./Kenmore West) and
Elissa McCune (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock) by shooting the ball off the left post. The shot came off the post and slipped into the right corner of the net for a 1-0 lead.
Tenyka Francique (Brampton, Ontario/International) extended the lead to 2-0 with her third goal of the season 1:32 later, finishing a pass from
Amanda Sharbaugh (Sarver, Pa./Knoch).
Millersville managed to cut the deficit in half right before the break. Allison Snyder got behind the Gannon defense with the aid of a nice pass from Sarah Tocci. The junior then beat the Gannon goalkeeper one-on-one for her first goal of the season and the Marauders' first score. The Lady Knights led 2-1 at halftime despite out-shooting the Marauders 11-4.
Francique gave Gannon what seemed to be another insurmountable lead in the 68th minute.
Emily Martin (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) was initially taken down in the box, giving the Lady Knights a penalty kick. Francique then converted the opportunity for her second goal of the night. The score pushed the Gannon lead back to two goals at 3-1. It was also a nice relief for the Lady Knights, who were 0-for-3 in penalty kicks prior to Friday night.
Millersville refused to give in though and rallied back with another goal three minutes later. Alexis Sutton headed a Gannon goal kick to Alison Silva at the 20-yard line. Silva took a couple steps and drilled the ball into the upper, left corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
The two teams played on even terms the rest of the way as Gannon out-shot Millersville 7-5 in the final 19:37. The Marauders' best opportunity to tie the contest came in the 88th minute. Six seconds after Kiersten McLennan hit the post,
Maggie Brinkman (Clarence Center, N.Y./Clarence) turned away a potential game-tying shot from Tocci.
Gannon out-shot Millersville 22-12 and held a 7-3 edge in corner kicks. Brinkman recorded four saves while picking up her first career victory. Taylor Suskie made 11 saves for the Marauders.
Head coach
Colin Petersen's squad scored three goals for the third time this season, but it marked the first time since a 4-1 victory at Mansfield on September 10. Individually, Francique produced a two-goal effort for the first time since October 24, 2009 against Clarion.
Gannon improved to 4-8-3 overall and 3-7-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) with Friday's victory. Millersville dropped to 1-14-1 overall and remained winless in conference play (0-11-1) with its seventh consecutive loss. The Lady Knights conclude the home portion of its 2010 schedule Saturday, October 23 against West Chester at Gannon University Field. The Golden Rams are ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division II and first in the NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings. Game time is scheduled for 5 p.m.
Saturday's contest will be Senior Night as
Sabrina Chirco (Brampton, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) and
Maggie Bowser (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) will be honored during pregame activities.
