ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon University men's soccer team fell to 15th-ranked Slippery Rock 4-3 in overtime at Gannon University Field Saturday.
Dan Howell (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) scored two goals for the Golden Knights.
Toby Bowser scored at the 96:46 mark in overtime to win the match for Slippery Rock. Benjamin Lloyd had tied the contest at three in the 88th minute.
The Rock (7-1, 3-0 PSAC) took an early lead, going up 2-0 in the opening half. Gannon seemed to be out of the match, but Howell led a spirited attack to put the Knights ahead.
GU (3-4-1, 1-2-0 PSAC) cut the deficit in half on a
Shane Hallett (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward) score in the 66th minute. Hallett's first career goal came on a header from a
Zane Polack (Bowling Green, Ohio/Bowling Green) assist. Howell tied the match at the 68:35 mark, beating goalkeeper Greg Blum after being set up by
Afrim Latifi (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep). Howell continued the momentum with a daring dribble drive through the Rock defense. The senior beat Blum on the left side to give Gannon the lead 3-2 in the 72nd minute.
The Rock responded, though, tying the match and then winning in extra time. The Golden Knights outshot Slippery Rock 21-15 and totaled four corner kicks to the Rock's none.
Gannon heads to West Virginia Wesleyan September 23 for a non-conference contest. The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
