ELKINS, W.Va. - Three different Golden Knights scored goals as the Gannon men's soccer team posted a 3-1 victory at regionally-ranked Davis & Elkins Wednesday afternoon. The Senators are ranked fifth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Atlantic regional rankings.
A pair of true freshmen needed only 1:49 to kick start the Gannon offense.
Tyler Hollingsworth (Johannesburg, South Africa/St. David's Marist Inanda) recorded the contest's first goal, scoring off an assist from
Sean Washek (Fairview, Pa./Cathedral Prep).
Afrim Latifi (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) gave Gannon a 2-0 halftime lead with an unassisted score at the 31:44 mark. It was his fifth goal of the season.
Davis & Elkins cut the deficit to 2-1 in the 67th minute (66:01), before
Dan Howell (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) iced the victory with his second goal of the season. The score came off an assist from Latifi with 2:10 remaining in regulation.
The two teams each took 13 shots while Davis & Elkins owned a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.
Steven Boehmer (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) recorded nine saves in goal.
Gannon evened its record at 3-3-1 with the victory. Davis & Elkins dropped to 3-2. The Golden Knights return to action Saturday, September 19 against Slippery Rock at Gannon University Field. Game time is scheduled for 3:30 p.m.
