ERIE, Pa. - Jordan Herrera scored twice as the Urbana men's soccer team needed only nine shots to defeat Gannon 3-1 Friday evening in the season opener for both teams.
The visitors struck first when Herrera got behind the defense and beat the Gannon goalkeeper to the right for a 1-0 lead at the 19:05 mark. The Blue Knights eventually went to halftime with a 1-0 advantage, despite being out-shot 15-6.
Afrim Latifi (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) knotted the match at one 6:48 into the second half. The junior took a pass from freshman
Sean Washek (Fairview, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and brought the two teams even.
Unfortunately, Gannon could never move ahead. John Kolhoff snapped the tie with 8:50 remaining, getting past the defense and chipping the ball past a diving goalkeeper. Herrera then iced the victory, scoring his second goal of the match with 3:03 showing on the clock.
Gannon out-shot Urbana 28-9 and held a 9-0 edge in corner kicks, but Urbana goalkeeper Huw Howell-Pryce recorded nine saves to keep the Golden Knights at bay.
Urbana improved to 1-0 while Gannon dropped to 0-1. The Golden Knights return to action Sunday, August 30 against Seton Hill at Gannon University Field. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
