ORLANDO, Fla.-The Gannon softball team won two games Friday at the Rebel Games, beating Holy Family 6-1 and Bellarmine 7-1.
Kelsey Brickman (Sylvania, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) and
Lauren Soldner (Sylvania, Ohio/Sylvania Southview) each threw a complete game to lead the Lady Knights.
In the first game, Gannon struck early.
Kara Hensley (Sylvania, Ohio/Notre Dame Academy) hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and Brickman did the rest. The junior went seven innings, allowing one unearned run on seven hits. She struck out 10 hitters in the victory.
Offensively, GU compiled 11 hits.
Hannah Koenig (Waterville, Ohio/Anthony Wayne) went 3-4 and Hensley had two hits.
Holli Michaels (Tacoma, Wash./Curtis) and
Carol Kienzl (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) each had two hits and
Casee Piquet (Newton Falls, Ohio/Newton Falls) drove in two runs.
In the win over Bellarmine, Gannon put together a four-run first inning to take control. Hensley had a two-run single and
Ashley Petrone (Uniontown, Pa./Albert Gallatin) drove in another run. Soldner went seven innings, giving up one unearned run on four hits, while striking out four batters.
The Knights had 14 hits in the contest, Kienzl went 3-4 with three RBIs.
Kadie Ondrus (Curtice, Ohio/Clay), Koenig, Michaels, and Hensley each had two hits.
Gannon is now 8-2 on the season and will play two more games Saturday, March 7. At 1 p.m., they are scheduled to play Kentucky Wesleyan, and at 3 p.m., they will face Dowling (N.Y.). The softball team will return to Erie for their home opener, Saturday, March 14, against Point Park.
