Gannon Men's Basketball Rolls into PSAC Championship with 69-50 Victory over Cheyney

Saturday's Title Game Against No. 21 Kutztown Slated for 7 p.m.

Senior Joe Lindsey led Gannon with 16 points during Friday's semifinal victory against Cheyney while becoming the 11th player in school history to hit 100 career three-pointers.
ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's basketball team jumped out to a 34-19 halftime lead after limited Cheyney to 26.7-percent (8-30) shooting en route to a 69-50 victory Friday night in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) semifinals hosted at the Gannon University's Hammermill Center.

Cheyney initially opened a 6-2 lead, but Gannon wasted little time responding by going on a 15-2 run over the next 5:59 to assume a 17-8 lead with 10:27 remaining in the first half. George Johnson (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) sparked the run with a pair of three-pointers. Four different Golden Knights scored during the run.

The lead ballooned to 32-12 with 3:11 showing on the clock after a 13-0 run. Pierre Howard (Chicago, Ill./Bloom) and Kyle Goldcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) tallied four points each. Joe Lindsey's (Spring Valley, N.Y./Spring Valley) bomb from behind the arc capped the blitz.

Cheyney produced the next seven points, before Dave Wilson's (Vidalia, La./Vidalia) lay-up with two seconds left sent Gannon to the break with a commanding 34-19 edge.

The Peach Street kids out-scored Cheyney 35-31 in the second half as the lead remained 15 and 23 points during the final 20 minutes.

Lindsey was Gannon's leading scorer with 16 points. The senior guard became the 11th player in school history to convert 100 three-pointers with a triple in the first half. Goldcamp recorded his 14th double-double in two seasons at Gannon with 15 points and 11 rebounds while reaching double digits in scoring for the 23rd consecutive game dating back to last season.

Johnson completed the double-digit group of scorers with 11 points and eight rebounds. Tyler Stoczynski (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added eight points and 12 rebounds.

Gannon shot 42.9 percent (24-56) from the field, 38.9 percent (7-18) from three-point range, and 60.9 percent (14-23) from the free throw line.

Dominique Curry headlined the Cheyney offense with a double-double, producing 16 points and 11 rebounds. Tyrone Smith added 14 markers.

Cheyney shot 33.9 percent (20-59) from the floor, 11.1 percent (2-18) from behind the arc, and 50 percent (8-16) from the charity stripe.

Gannon, ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division II and No. 1 in the Atlantic region, improved to 26-3 with its eighth consecutive victory. Cheyney dropped to 18-9. The Golden Knights face No. 21 Kutztown Saturday night (March 7) in a showdown for the PSAC Championship. The Golden Bears, who defeated Slippery Rock 103-90 in Friday's first semifinal, are ranked No. 2 in the latest regional rankings and the winner of Saturday's championship game will most likely capture the region's top seed. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
