ERIE, Pa. - No. 17 Indiana (Pa.) jumped out to a 15-point first-half lead and held off a late rally by No. 24 Gannon en route to a 64-60 victory Tuesday night in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Women's Basketball Quarterfinals at the Hammermill Center.
Ten days ago, Gannon trounced IUP 65-48 during its annual Pink Zone game. However, the Crimson Hawks brought a different emotion to the Hammermill Center Tuesday night and snapped Gannon's 12-game home winning streak and 10-game overall winning streak.
IUP jumped on the home team early, grabbing a 19-10 lead with 12:05 left in the first half. Trailing 6-3, All-American Jahzinga Tracey ignited a 16-4 run with back-to-back three-pointers. The Crimson Hawks slowly built their lead to 36-21 after a mini 6-0 run late in the half. Back-to-back three-pointers from Lacey Claar and Tracey extended IUP's lead to 15 points with 2:09 showing on the first-half clock.
A three-pointer from
Kristina Freeman (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) cut the deficit to 36-27 at the intermission.
Gannon responded after halftime like a team with its back against the wall. The Lady Knights scored the first five points of the second half and needed only four minutes and six seconds to forge a 42-42 tie. A lay-up and free throw from
Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) at the 15:54 mark capped the 15-6 run.
However, Indiana (Pa.) immediately responded with the next four points to regain control. The Crimson Hawks rebuilt a seven-point lead until
Kim Vargas' three-pointer with 8:01 to play brought the Lady Knights back within 51-49.
Almost deja vu, IUP responded with the next five points to regain control at 56-49. Gannon had one last chance after Freeman's three-pointer with 59 seconds left cut the deficit to 61-58. After an IUP missed shot, Freeman was fouled and hit two free throws with 26 ticks left.
Kylie Miller pushed the lead to 63-60 with a pair of free throws, before
Carrie Nolan's (Girard, Pa./Girard) potential game-tying three-pointer with five seconds left was slightly off the mark. Miller then hit one more free throw with three seconds left to seal the 64-60 victory.
Freeman led Gannon with 19 points, four assists, three steals, and two blocks. Nolan finished with 17 points, including 15 from five three-pointers.
Brittany Tabron (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) recorded her 15th career double-double with 10 points and 14 points. Vargas chipped in 12 points off the bench.
Gannon shot 36 percent (18-50) from the field, 32.1 percent (9-28) from three-point range, and 75 percent (15-20) from the free throw line.
Tracey led all scorers with 22 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, and three steals. Claar was the only other Crimson Hawk in double digits, posting 15 points off the bench.
Indiana (Pa.) shot 45.8 percent (22-48) from the floor, 50 percent (10-20) from behind the arc, and 62.5 percent (10-16) from the charity stripe.
Gannon, ranked No. 24 in NCAA Division II and No. 2 in the Atlantic region, dropped to 24-4. IUP, ranked No. 17 in NCAA Division II and No. 3 in the region, improved to 23-5. The Lady Knights will now await word on a possible NCAA Tournament bid. The NCAA Division II Selection Show is scheduled for Sunday, March 8 at 9 p.m.
