CLARION, Pa. - Five Lady Knights reached double digits in scoring and
Brittany Tabron (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) recorded her 13th career double-double as the Gannon women's basketball team disposed of Clarion 69-63 Saturday night on the road. The victory completed a season sweep of the Golden Eagles and gave Gannon its second 20-win season in the last three campaigns.
Trailing 12-11, Gannon produced the game's first run by scoring nine consecutive points to assume a 20-12 lead.
Abby Bunstine (Chillicothe, Ohio/Chillicothe) ignited the run with a three-pointer.
Carrie Nolan's (Girard, Pa./Girard) lay-up with 10:13 left in the first half capped the blitz.
Bunstine's triple with 3:04 remaining in the half pushed Gannon's lead into double digits. Her two free throws with 43 seconds showing on the clock gave the Lady Knights their largest lead of the first half at 41-28. A Clarion lay-up 22 seconds later sent Gannon to the intermission with a 41-30 advantage.
Head coach
Cleve Wright's squad seemed to be in complete control with a 47-33 lead 3:36 into the final stanza, but Clarion rallied with a 16-3 run over the next five minutes and 33 seconds. Bethany Koch's three-pointer at the 10:51 mark brought the Golden Eagles within 50-49.
Gannon did not wilt though as the Lady Knights responded with a 14-4 blitz to regain control at 64-53. Clarion ended the game with a 10-5 run to account for the final 69-63 score.
Tabron led Gannon's offensive unit with 15 points and 11 rebounds. The junior hit 6-of-12 shots from the field. Bunstine posted a season-high 14 points off the bench, going 3-of-5 from three-point range and 5-of-7 from the free throw line.
Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) and
Kristina Freeman (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) chipped in 12 points each. Freeman also recorded seven assists and four steals. Nolan completed Gannon's group of double-digit scorers with 10 points and extended her streak of consecutive games with a three-pointer to 24. Her lone three-pointer of the night moved her into a tie with Carol Kloecker (1986-89) for sixth place all-time at Gannon with 128 career triples.
Gannon shot 38.6 percent (22-57) from the field, 26.7 percent (4-15) from three-point range, and 65.6 percent (21-32) from the free throw line.
Koch led all scorers with 24 points, nine rebounds, and five assists. She was 9-of-16 from the field and 5-of-7 from long range. Katrina Greer and Shaina Smith added 12 and 10 points, respectively.
Clarion shot 38.3 percent (23-60) from the floor, 40.7 percent (11-27) from behind the arc, and 85.7 percent (6-7) from the charity stripe.
Gannon, ranked No. 3 in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings, improved to 20-3 overall and 8-2 in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division with its sixth consecutive victory. The Lady Knights remained one game behind California (Pa.) and Indiana (Pa.) in the Western Division race as both also recorded victories on Saturday.
Clarion dropped to 9-14 overall and 3-7 in conference play. The Lady Knights return home Wednesday, February 18 against Edinboro. Game time at the Hammermill Center is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
