No. 6 Gannon Women's Basketball Team Steam Rolls Central State 108-62

Senior Kim Vargas scored a season-high 20 points and grabbed six rebounds during Tuesday's convincing victory.
WILBERFORCE, Ohio - The sixth-ranked Gannon women's basketball team shot 63.8 percent (44-69) from the field and easily rolled past NCAA Division II Independent Central State 108-62 Tuesday night on the road.

Five Lady Knights reached double digits in scoring as Gannon extended its regular-season win streak to 21 games dating back to last season. In the process, the squad continued the best start in school history and moved to 11-0. The Lady Knights are the fifth team in school history to produce a pair of 100-point games in the same season.

It didn't take long for Gannon to pull away from Central State. The Lady Knights scored the first 13 points, before the Marauders netted their first basket 3:32 into the affair.

Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) began and ended a 10-0 run later in the first half, giving Gannon a 45-12 lead with 6:41 remaining. A Shanna Thompson (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights) three-point play with 16 ticks on the clock sent the Lady Knights into the break with a 59-22 lead. It also represented the squad's largest advantage of the first 20 minutes. The Lady Knights shot 66.7 percent (22-33) from the floor and 63.6 percent (7-11) from three-point range in the first half.

Head coach Cleve Wright's squad scored the first 10 points in the second half and never looked back. Gannon's lead reached 50 points twice, at 75-25 with 16:51 remaining and 108-58 with 2:37 showing on the clock.

Brittany Tabron (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) led all scorers with 21 points and six rebounds. Vargas added a season-high 20 points and six rebounds. The two post players combined to convert 18-of-21 shots and helped the Lady Knights out-score the Marauders 64-14 in the paint.

Kristina Freeman (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) recorded 13 points, six assists, three rebounds and three steals. Thompson and Caitlyn Lowe (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) added 11 points each off the bench.

Gannon shot 63.8 percent (44-69) from the field, 42.9 percent (9-21) from three-point range and 73.3 percent (11-15) from the free throw line.

Ashley McGee and Brooklyn Morrow headlined the Central State attack with 14 points each. Linda Ubadigbo chipped in 12 points.

Central State shot 37.3 percent (22-59) from the floor, 33.3 percent (7-21) from behind the arc and 78.6 percent (11-14) from the charity stripe.

Gannon now heads into the Christmas break with a perfect 11-0 record. Central State drops to 5-7. The Lady Knights return to action Wednesday, December 30 against St. Thomas Aquinas at the Hammermill Center. Please note the game time is scheduled for 3 p.m., which is two hours later than originally scheduled.
