Gannon Women's Basketball Team Remains Undefeated with Easy Victory over Alderson-Broaddus

CLARION, Pa. - The Gannon women's basketball team pounded Alderson-Broaddus inside the paint all night long and rolled to an 81-42 victory Monday evening during the second night of the Clarion Classic. In the process, the 19th-ranked Lady Knights remained undefeated at 5-0 and extended their regular-season unbeaten streak to 15 games.

Gannon wasted little time to produce a sizeable lead. The Lady Knights scored the first six points and 19 of the first 23. Leading 10-4, the squad rolled off a 9-0 run to assume a commanding 19-4 advantage. Four different Lady Knights scored during the run, capped by Kim Vargas' (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) lay-up with 12:19 remaining in the first half.

Head coach Cleve Wright's squad shifted its gear into cruise control after a 17-0 run over the span of 6:21 late in the half. It was another balanced blitz with five different Lady Knights putting the ball through the hoop.

Carrie Nolan (Girard, Pa./Girard) nailed two three-pointers during the run while Brittany Tabron (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) and Tiffany Crocker (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) added two baskets each. Shanna Thompson's (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights) jumper with 2:52 left until halftime gave Gannon a 43-11 lead. The two teams traded baskets in the final 2:09 to account for a 45-13 halftime difference.

Gannon shot a red-hot 59.4 percent (19-32) and out-rebounded Alderson-Broaddus 22-11 in the first half. The Lady Knights had large advantages in points in the paint (28-4), points off turnovers (21-5) and bench points (17-7) during the first 20 minutes. Gannon extended its lead to 44 points on two occasions in the second half, before setting for an 81-42 victory.

Tabron led Gannon's offensive attack with a season-high 16 points and seven rebounds. The senior forward hit 7-of-10 shots. Vargas and Thompson added 10 points each. Kristina Freeman (Yonkers, N.Y./Pelham Memorial) recorded a career-high 11 rebounds, six points and five assists.

Gannon shot 52.3 percent (34-65) from the field, 29.4 percent (5-17) from three-point range and 72.7 percent (8-11) from the free throw line. The Lady Knights won the overall battle for points in the paint (52-14), points off turnovers (31-16), second-chance points (22-7), rebounds (48-23) and bench points (19-13).

Tori Charley was the only Alderson-Broaddus player to reach double digits in scoring, netting 10 points. She added four rebounds, three steals and three blocks. The Battlers shot 29.2 percent (14-48) from the floor, 27.3 percent (6-22) from behind the arc and 61.5 percent (8-13) from the charity stripe.

Gannon remained undefeated at 5-0 with Monday's victory. Alderson-Broaddus dropped to 0-2. The Lady Knights open the home portion of their schedule Friday, November 20 against former Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Ferris State at the Hammermill Center.
