Brittany Tabron (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) recorded her third double-double in four games and
Carrie Nolan (Girard, Pa./Girard) netted 18 points for the third consecutive game as the 19th-ranked Gannon women's basketball team shook of a shaky first half en route to 65-60 victory over NCAA Division II Atlantic Region foe Bowie State Sunday afternoon during the first day of the Clarion Classic.
Gannon missed 22 of its first 27 shots and fell behind 18-9 with 8:27 left in the first half. However,
Tiffany Crocker's (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) three-pointer ignited an 18-6 run to end the half.
Amanda Dacek (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/Berea) started a 9-0 run late in the half with a lay-up, jumper and free throw. Tabron and Nolan followed with lay-ups to push Gannon in front 25-22 with 59 seconds left in the stanza. Each team converted two free throws in the waning seconds as the Lady Knights took a 27-24 lead into the intermission.
The two squads played on even terms during the first five minutes of the second half, before Gannon produced the decisive run. The Lady Knights bumped their lead to 42-32 with a
Shanna Thompson (Shaker Heights, Ohio/Shaker Heights) jumper, a Nolan three-pointer and Tabron lay-up. The 7-0 run was part of a 17-5 blitz that gave Gannon a 52-37 advantage with 10:19 showing on the clock.
Head coach
Cleve Wright's squad maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the game until Bowie State almost pulled out a miraculous comeback. Trailing 61-51, the Bulldogs scored six consecutive points to pull within 61-57 on Teaunsha Robinson's jumper with 1:04 to play. However, Gannon nailed four free throws in the final 24 seconds to seal a 65-60 victory.
Tabron led the Gannon offense with her third double-double of the season and 20th of her career with 10 points and 13 rebounds. Nolan was the only other Lady Knight to reach double digits in scoring with 18 points, tying a season-high for the third time in four games.
Gannon shot 37.7 percent (23-61) from the field, 27.3 percent (6-22) from three-point range and 72.2 percent (13-18) from the free throw line.
Robinson headlined the Bowie State offense with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Lakisha Walker chipped in 15 points. The Bulldogs shot 37.5 percent (21-56) from the floor, 35.3 percent (6-17) from behind the arc and 57.1 percent (12-21) from the charity stripe.
Gannon remained undefeated at 4-0 with Sunday's victory. Bowie State, which was among others receiving votes in the
USA Today ESPN Division II Preseason Top 25, dropped to 0-1. The Lady Knights conclude play at the Clarion Classic Monday, November 16 against Alderson-Broaddus. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m. The contest can be heard live on 90.5 WERG and via the Internet at
