WHEELING, W.Va. - The Gannon men's soccer team saw its winless streak hit six matches Wednesday night with a 3-0 loss at regionally-ranked Wheeling Jesuit. The Cardinals are ranked eighth in the latest National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Atlantic regional rankings.
Gannon out-shot Wheeling Jesuit 9-4 in the first 45 minutes, but the two teams went to halftime tied at zero. The Cardinals then controlled the second half, out-scoring the Golden Knights 3-0.
Andrew Hickey opened the scoring in the 61st minute with an unassisted goal. Hickey then set up a Victor Picchio's score 6:52 later, increasing the home team's lead to 2-0. Stephen Hawthorne's goal iced the Cardinal victory with 4:48 left in regulation.
Gannon out-shot Wheeling Jesuit 19-15 and held a slight 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Matthew Ruston (Whitby, Ontario/Fr. Leo J. Austin Catholic) recorded five saves in his second start of the season between the pipes. Shane Young turned away six shots for the Cardinals.
Gannon dropped to 3-8-2 overall with Wednesday's loss. Wheeling Jesuit improved to 7-3-1. The Golden Knights returns to action Tuesday, October 13 against Alderson-Broaddus at Gannon University Field. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
