ERIE, Pa. -
Breanne Radin's (Lockwood, N.Y./Spencer-Van Etten) two goals lifted the Gannon women's soccer team to an important 2-1 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division victory over No. 20 California (Pa.) Tuesday afternoon at Gannon University Field.
Gannon clawed within three points of second place in the PSAC West with the victory. More importantly, the Lady Knights increased their lead over Slippery Rock for the final PSAC post-season spot to four points with three matches to play.
The decision will also help Gannon regionally. The Lady Knights were ranked eighth in the latest NCAA Division II Atlantic regional rankings while California (Pa.) was tabbed fourth.
Radin wasted little time getting Gannon on the board, scoring her second goal of the season 5:03 into the affair.
Amanda Sharbaugh's (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) initial crossing pass deflected off the California goalkeeper, before Radin knocked the rebound into the net.
The junior midfielder netted her second goal 17:08 later off an assist from
Sarah Deck (Hamilton, Ontario/Bishop Ryan Catholic S.S.) as the Lady Knights went to halftime with a 2-0 advantage.
California cut the deficit in half on Carly Work's sixth goal of the season with 2:41 left in regulation, but the Vulcans couldn't muster another shot in the final minutes.
California out-shot Gannon 24-16 while the Lady Knights held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Sabrina Chirco (Brampton, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) turned away seven shots in goal.
Gannon improved to 8-5-1 overall and 6-4-1 in the PSAC West with Tuesday's victory. California dropped to 12-4-1 overall and 7-3-1 in conference play. The Lady Knights return to action Saturday, October 24 at Clarion. Game time is scheduled for 6 p.m.
