ERIE, Pa. - A pair of
Dan Howell (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) second-half goals helped the Gannon men's soccer team remain red hot with a 3-0 shutout of California (Pa.) Tuesday afternoon at Gannon University Field.
In the process, the Golden Knights extended their win streak to three matches and brought the squad within six points of the final Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division post-season spot with two matches to play.
Howell became the eighth player in school history to record 100 career points with the contest's first goal in the 66th minute. Following a California turnover, the senior forward scored his eighth goal of the season off a pass from
Afrim Latifi (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep).
The Erie, Pa., native gave Gannon insurance with his ninth goal 8:10 later, heading in a crossing pass from
Shane Hallet (Elizabeth, Pa./Elizabeth Forward).
Adam Sharbaugh (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) iced the victory with 53 seconds left in regulation, scoring his third goal of the campaign off an assist from
Evan Chate (Vendays-Montalivet, France/Odilon Redon).
California out-shot Gannon 19-15 and held a 4-3 edge in corner kicks.
Steven Boehmer (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) recorded a season-high 11 saves en route to his second consecutive shutout.
Gannon improved to 6-8-2 overall and 3-3 in the PSAC West while remaining perfect on its current homestand. California dropped to 10-5 overall and 2-5 in conference play. The Golden Knights conclude the home portion of their schedule Saturday, October 24 against rival Mercyhurst. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
