ERIE, Pa. - The Lady Knight soccer team beat rival Mercyhurst 4-2 at Gannon University Field Friday night.
Tenyka Francique (Brampton, Ontario/International) scored twice as GU won for the first time in 27 all-time matches with the Lakers.
The teams played a tense match, with each squad taking turns with the momentum. Mercyhurst led 2-1 midway through the second half when Francique's crossing pass was redirected by an
Amanda Sharbaugh (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) diving header to tie the contest in the 64th minute. The Knights set up for a corner kick in the 76th minute.
Katie Urban's (Columbia Station, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) kick was headed past Laker goalkeeper Rachel Griepsma by senior
Laura Piazza (Brampton, Ontario/Cardinal Leger S.S.) for a 3-2 edge. The goal was Piazza's first of the season and the third of the All-Region defender's career.
Francique added an insurance score at the 83:41 mark with an assist from
Andrea Eisenhart (East Liverpool, Ohio/Beaver Local).
Gannon got on the board first, with Francique scoring on a direct kick in the 30th minute. Mercyhurst responded with a goal late in the first half to tie and then led 2-1 after a score in the 59th minute.
The Knights outshot the Hurst 20-15 and compiled an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Sabrina Chirco (Brampton, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) recorded three saves for the victory in net.
GU was 0-22-4 in the all-time series with the Lakers. The four goals are the most the team has scored against the Lakers in a single match.
The Knights travel to Indiana (Pa.) Tuesday, October 6 for a conference match at 4 p.m.
