Gannon Men's Soccer Team Defeats Alderson-Broaddus Behind Pair of Career Firsts

Junior Evan Chate's first career goal was the eventual game-winner Tuesday afternoon against Alderson-Broaddus.
ERIE, Pa. - Evan Chate (Vendays-Montalivet, France/Odilon Redon) and Pete Williams (Ewing, N.J./Ewing) each recorded their first career goal as the Gannon men's soccer team slipped past Alderson-Broaddus 2-1 Tuesday afternoon at Gannon University Field.

Gannon controlled the majority of the match until Alderson-Broaddus rallied late. The Golden Knights out-shot the Battlers 14-6 in the first 45 minutes and went to halftime with a 1-0 lead on Williams' first career goal 13:31 into the affair.

Ross Matthews (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) started the scoring play with a crossing pass from the right side. Chate's initial shot off the crossing pass was turned aside by Alderson-Broaddus goalkeeper Neil Elliot-Wright, but Williams gathered the rebound and sent a shot over Elliot-Wright and into the net.

Gannon extended its lead to 2-0 on a perfect scoring play in the 70th minute. Chate dribbled into the offensive end and passed the ball to Adam Sharbaugh (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) on the right side, who passed it right back to Chate in front of the goal. The junior then redirected the ball past the A-B goalkeeper for his first career score.

Alderson-Broaddus made things interesting in the final five minutes. The Battlers were awarded a penalty kick with 4:19 left in regulation after a hand ball. Steven Boehmer (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) made the initial save on Heiko Voss, but the Alderson-Broaddus forward knocked the rebound past Boehmer for the visitor's first goal of the match.

A-B had two more scoring chances in the final minutes. Boehmer made a save on Paul Ogedegbe's header with 1:03 remaining and made a nice grab on a crossing pass in the final five seconds.

Gannon out-shot Alderson-Broaddus 30-12 and held a 10-1 edge in corner kicks. Boehmer recorded six saves between the pipes. Elliot-Wright and Josh Teets combined to make 13 saves for the Battlers.

Gannon improved to 4-8-2 while snapping a six-match winless streak. Alderson-Broaddus dropped to 5-7. The Golden Knights continue a four-match homestand Saturday, October 17 against Lock Haven at Gannon University Field. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
