Gannon Wrestling Team Finishes Ninth at Midwest Classic

Four Golden Knights Record Top-Five Finishes

Junior Frank McGrath finished third in the heavyweight division at the Midwest Classic with a 4-1 record.
INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - Four Golden Knights finished in the top five of their respective weight classes as the Gannon wrestling team finished ninth out of 22 teams Sunday afternoon at the two-day Midwest Classic hosted by the University of Indianapolis.

Newberry (S.C.) won the team title with 149.5 points. Wisconsin-Parkside (118.5), Ashland (95.5), Adams State (90), and Findlay (87.5) completed the top five. Gannon finished ninth with 61 points.

Four Golden Knights were still alive on the second day of action. Frank McGrath (Hammonton, N.J./St. Augustine Prep) was Gannon's best finisher, placing third at heavyweight. The junior advanced to the semifinals, before falling to top-seeded Cy Wainwright of Newberry in Sunday's first match. He rebounded with a pin of Central Missouri's Brandon Hayes in the wrestlebacks, before pinning No. 7 Mike Carpenter of West Liberty State in the third-place match. McGrath finished the weekend with a 4-1 record.

Jacob Tazzi (Chesterfield, Mich./Anchor Bay) finished fourth at 184, going 1-2 on Sunday. The senior opened Sunday's action with a loss to No. 2 seed Bryant Blanton of Newberry in the semifinals. He then defeated No. 8 Matt Alexander of Ohio Northern 4-0 in the wrestlebacks, before falling 3-2 to No. 3 Hiram Smith of Findlay in the third-place match. Tazzi won three of five matches this weekend.

#A.J. Milanak# (Apollo, Pa./Kiski Area) made a stunning run through the 141-pound bracket. The sophomore entered the classic unseeded, but won six matches. He defeated three consecutive ranked opponents, including two in his first two matches on Sunday in the wrestlebacks. Milanak opened the day with victories over No. 7 Jay Sherer of Augustana (15-7) and No. 4 Tony Washington of Newberry (5-1), before falling 4-2 to No. 3 Matt Irwin of Indianapolis in the third-place match.

Brandon Monin (Lancaster, N.Y./Lancaster) dropped his first two matches of the day at 157, before winning the fifth-place match 7-2 over No. 7 Matt Collom of Missouri Baptist. The senior began the day with a 5-0 loss to top-seeded Noomis Jones of Adams State in the semifinals and followed with a 1-0 loss to No. 2 Luke Miller of Ohio Northern in the wrestlebacks. He finished 4-2 at the classic.
