Gannon Women's Basketball Extends Win Streak to Eight With 79-52 Victory at Bloomsburg

Redshirt junior Carrie Nolan continued her red-hot play with a game-high 23 points at Bloomsburg.
BLOOMSBURG, Pa. - Nine different Lady Knights scored and 10 played at least 12 minutes as the Gannon women's basketball team simply wore down Bloomsburg with its depth en route to a 79-52 victory Saturday afternoon on the Huskies' home floor.

In the process, Gannon moved to 11-1 overall and tied the program's best 12-game start since the 2001-02 season. A victory Sunday at Mansfield would equal the program's best 13-game start since the 1987-88 squad opened the campaign with a 14-1 mark.

Bloomsburg initially took a 6-1 lead on back-to-back three-pointers from Kelsey Gallagher in the first minute of the game, but Gannon quickly responded with a 15-0 run over the next 3:59. Carrie Nolan (Girard, Pa./Girard) started the blitz with a three-pointer and ended it with consecutive triples. Her third bomb capped the run and gave the Lady Knights a 16-6 lead with 14:48 remaining in the half.

The Gannon defense took its toll at the same time. The Lady Knights held the Huskies without a field goal for six minutes and 54 seconds. The home squad could only manage five free throws between Gallagher's three-pointer 57 seconds into the game and Colleen Kegerreis' jumper at the 12:09 mark.

Head coach Cleve Wright's squad controlled the majority of the first half and owned its largest lead at 38-22 with 4:28 remaining when Bloomsburg began a big run. The Huskies scored the final 11 points of the half and went to the intermission with the momentum and a 38-33 deficit.

The run continued at the beginning of the second half. A lay-up from Monica Dennision and three-pointer from Kelly Joyce in the first 1:05 tied the game at 38, forging the first tie since 18:03 was left in the first half.

In all, it was a six minute scoring drought before Gannon snapped Bloomsburg 16-0 run on two free throws from Nolan. Brittany Tabron (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) followed with Gannon's first field goal in seven minutes and seven seconds.

Leading 42-40, Gannon regained control of the game with a 9-0 run. Allison Rothlisberger (New Martinsville, W.Va./Magnolia) had four points during the streak which was capped by another Nolan three-pointer.

The lead hovered between 11 and 15 points for the next seven minutes. The Lady Knights then put the game away with a 19-3 run over the final 6:39.

Nolan led all scorers with 23 points, reaching the 20-point plateau for the third time in the last five games. The redshirt junior hit four three-pointers and has hit at least one triple in 13 consecutive games dating back to the 2006-07 season. She redshirted and did not play in 2007-08. Her first three-pointer marked the 100th of her career.

Kim Vargas (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) was the only other Lady Knight in double digits with 16 points off the bench. She had reached double digits in scoring nine times despite only starting one game this season.

Tiffany Crocker (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) dished out six assists, moving past Pam Bonadio and into sixth place all-time at Gannon with 379 career assists.

Gannon shot 45.2 percent (28-62) from the floor, including a 50-percent (14-28) clip in the second half. The Lady Knights shot 39.3 percent (11-28) from three-point range and 75 percent (12-16) from the free throw line.

Gallagher and Kegerreis led Bloomsburg with 16 points each. The Huskies shot 34.6 percent (18-52) from the floor, 35 percent (7-20) from behind the arc, and 75 percent (9-12) from the charity stripe.

Gannon, among other receiving votes in the latest USA Today ESPN Division II Top 25, improved to 11-1 with its eighth consecutive victory. Bloomsburg dropped to 8-4. The Lady Knights conclude Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) crossover play Sunday, January 11 at Mansfield. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
