ERIE, Pa. - The California (Pa.) men's soccer team wasted little time Saturday afternoon showing it was intend on snapping Gannon's 13-match home unbeaten streak. The Vulcans scored twice in the first 15:27 and posted a 3-1 victory in front of 385 fans at Gannon University Field. The loss was Gannon's first at home since October 29, 2006.
Nick Helbig put California on the board first with his second goal of the season 11:59 into the match, heading in a corner kick from Shakir McCoy. McDowell graduate Jeremy Blymiller pushed the advantage to 2-0 three minutes and 28 seconds later, taking a long pass from the Cal goalkeeper and scoring into the left side of the net.
The onslaught continued with Mike Luecke's third goal of the season in the 32nd minute. California went to halftime with a 3-0 lead after out-shooting the Golden Knights 12-5 in the first 45 minutes.
Gannon netted its only goal in the 77th minute.
Dan Howell (Erie, Pa./Iroquois) passed the ball to Kevin Strell (Eastlake, Ohio/Willoughby South), who fired a shot. Bruce Stephen (Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa/Westville Boys) then redirected the ball into the net for his first career goal.
California out-shot Gannon 20-13, but the Golden Knights held an 8-4 edge in corner kicks. Steven Boehmer (Dayton, Ohio/Carroll) recorded six saves in the loss.
Gannon dropped to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the PSAC with Saturday's loss. California improved to 2-0-2 overall and 1-0-1 in conference play. The Golden Knights return to action Tuesday, September 9 against West Virginia Wesleyan at Gannon University Field. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
