Gannon Women's Soccer Hosts California (Pa.) Saturday

ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon University women's soccer team continues their season Saturday, September 6 with a 1 p.m. match against California (Pa.) at Gannon University Field.

GU (1-0, 1-0) won its season opener, beating Lock Haven (1-1, 0-1) 4-2 Wednesday. The Lady Knights were led by freshman Amanda Sharbaugh (Sarver, Pa./Knoch), who had a goal and an assist in her first collegiate game.

California (2-1, 0-1) beat Pitt-Johnstown and Wheeling Jesuit to begin the 2008 season. They lost to Mercyhurst Wednesday 3-2.

The Lady Knights return seven starters and 11 letterwinners from last season's 7-8-1 team. In its final year in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), Gannon beat Northwood for their lone league win.

Gannon brings back four of its top five scorers from 2007, including midfielder Courtney Rowan (Mentor, Ohio/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin), who scored seven goals to lead the team. Jamie Shadd (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) led the team with four assists a year ago. She returns at the forward position.

The Vulcans were chosen to finish seventh in the PSAC West preseason poll. They are led by forwards Sam Regney and Jodi McDonald, who have both scored two goals this season.

Coach Colin Peterson's sixth season at the helm of the Lady Knights marks Gannon's first in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC). GU was chosen to finish fifth in the PSAC West, according to the preseason coaches' poll.

GU hits the road Tuesday, as they will travel to Clarion for a 7 p.m. match. The Lady Knights return home September 13 to host Slippery Rock at 1 p.m.
