ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon women's basketball team wasted little time putting last Monday's tough loss out of its mind. The Lady Knights scored the first 11 points and never looked back in a convincing 109-38 victory over Salem International Wednesday evening at the Hammermill Center.
It was Gannon's largest margin of victory since a 116-43 decision over Ohio Valley in the 2001-02 season opener. The 109 points were eight shy of the school's single-game scoring record. The squad finished four three-pointers, five assists, and nine steals shy of school records in those categories.
Four different Lady Knights scored during the opening 11-0 run, capped by
Carrie Nolan's (Girard, Pa./Girard) three-pointer and lay-up. Following two Salem International free throws, Gannon scored the next 10 points for a 21-2 lead with 12:51 remaining in the first half. The Lady Knights scored the final nine points of the half and went to the break with a 60-20 lead. The home squad shot 52.2 percent (24-46) from the field and out-rebounded Salem International 25-10 in the first 20 minutes.
Gannon slowly increased its lead throughout the second half despite playing everyone in uniform. The Lady Knights' biggest lead of the evening came at 109-36 on
Kim Vargas' (Sterling, Va./Broad Run) three-pointer with 51 seconds remaining.
Caitlyn Lowe (Gettysburg, Pa./Gettysburg) led all scorers with 20 points off the bench.
Brittany Tabron (Canton, Ohio/Canton Central Catholic) recorded her eighth career double-double with 19 points and 12 rebounds.
Amanda Dacek (Middleburg Heights, Ohio/Berea) produced her first career double-double with 13 points, 12 assists, and six steals.
Vargas added 18 points and six steals off the bench.
Tiffany Crocker (Dublin, Ohio/Dublin Coffman) and Nolan chipped in 11 and 10 points, respectively. All 10 players in uniform scored and played at least 13 minutes.
Gannon shot 53.8 percent (43-80) from the field, 51.9 percent (14-27) from three-point range, and 69.2 percent (9-13) from the free throw line.
Jessica Lockett headlined Salem International's seven-player roster with 19 points. She was the only Tiger in double digits.
Salem International shot 33.3 percent (13-39) from the floor, 20 percent (2-10) from behind the arc, and 76.9 percent (10-13) from the charity stripe.
Gannon improved to 4-1 with Wednesday's victory. Salem International remained winless at 0-5. The Lady Knights return to action Saturday, December 6 against Lake Erie at the Hammermill Center. Game time is scheduled for 1 p.m.
