ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon men's basketball team, ranked No. 6 in NCAA Division II, has proven it can shoot the ball and dominate the glass through the first five games of the season. It was another winning formula for the Golden Knights, who posted a workmanlike 82-55 victory over Allegheny Wednesday night at the Hammermill Center.
Gannon shot over 50 percent for the third consecutive game and posted a 47-23 advantage on the glass en route to the victory. The Golden Knights have out-rebounded their opponent in 15 consecutive games. In the process, the squad won its 14th consecutive home game and 25th consecutive game when leading at halftime.
The two local schools played evenly for the majority of the game despite the final score. The difference was the first 10 minutes of the game. Gannon got off to its usual fast start, jumping out to a 16-2 lead 5:40 into the contest. Five different Golden Knights scored during the opening run.
Joe Lindsey (Spring Valley, N.Y./Spring Valley) and
Kyle Goldcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) each had a pair of baskets during the early blitz.
Allegheny trimmed to deficit to 22-11 on a three-pointer from Peter Jones, but Gannon responded with a 12-0 run to assume a 34-11 advantage on Goldcamp's lay-up at the 7:47 mark. Lindsey and
Dave Wilson (Vidalia, La./Vidalia) scored four points each during the decisive streak.
Gannon led 45-26 at halftime. The Golden Knights' largest lead of the evening came at 82-53 with 55 seconds remaining in the game.
Lindsey led four players in double digits with a season-high 18 points, seven assists, seven rebounds, and eight steals. The senior point guard set career-highs in rebounds and steals.
Pierre Howard (Chicago, Ill./Bloom) reached double digits for the fourth consecutive game with 15 points. Goldcamp and Wilson added 10 points each.
Mark Demski (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds off the bench. All 14 players in uniform saw action while 12 scored points.
Gannon shot 51.5 percent (35-68) from the field, 35.7 percent (5-14) from three-point range, and 77.8 percent (7-9) from the free throw line.
George Raftis and Charlie Jaicks headlined Allegheny's offensive attack with 13 points each. The Gators shot 42 percent (21-50) from the floor, 44.4 percent (4-9) from behind the arc, and 50 percent (9-18) from the charity stripe.
Gannon remained undefeated at 4-0 with Wednesday's victory. Allegheny dropped to 2-4. The Golden Knights will take 15 days off for final exams before returning to action Thursday, December 18 against Urbana at the Hammermill Center. Game time is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
