ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon men's basketball team shook off the rust from a 15-day layoff and final exams week midway through the first half and coasted to a 92-55 victory over NCAA Division II Independent Urbana Thursday night at the Hammermill Center. The victory completes a season sweep of the Blue Knights, who dropped a 78-42 home decision to the Golden Knights in the 2008-09 season opener.
In the process, Gannon extended three long streaks. The Golden Knights won their 15th consecutive home game, out-rebounded their opponent for the 20th straight game, and won their 26th consecutive contest when leading at halftime.
Gannon, ranked No. 4 in NCAA Division II, needed 6:36 to open a 10-4 lead on back-to-back scores from
Kyle Goldcamp (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic). The lead hovered between seven and 12 points until
Pierre Howard's (Chicago, Ill./Bloom) 6-0 solo run gave the Golden Knights a 30-15 advantage with five minutes to play. The senior followed a three-pointer with a lay-up and free throw.
Mark Demski's (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) lay-up with six seconds left on the clock sent Gannon into the break with its biggest lead of the half at 40-22.
The outcome was never in jeopardy in the second half. Gannon opened the final 20 minutes with a 15-4 run. Goldcamp's tip-in at the 16:23 mark pushed the Golden Knights in front 55-26.
Urbana never closed within 20 points the rest of the way.
Malcolm Woodbury's (Norfolk, Va./Granby) free throw with 1:15 left gave Gannon its biggest lead of the evening at 92-52. Urbana then scored the final three points to account for the final 92-55 score.
All 14 players in uniform saw playing time while 12 dented the scoring column. Howard led the way with 19 points, reaching double digits for the fifth consecutive game. Goldcamp recorded 15 points and seven rebounds.
Alfonso Scandrett (Greensboro, N.C./Northwest Guilford) scored a career-high 12 points off the bench, hitting 6-of-9 shots in 18 minutes of action.
George Johnson (Arlington, Va./Wakefield) completed the group of double-digit scorers with 10 markers.
Gannon shot 53.1 percent (34-64) from the field, including a 59.4 percent (19-32) clip in the second half. The Golden Knights have shot 50 percent or better in four consecutive games. The squad shot 33.3 percent (5-15) from three-point range and 65.5 percent (19-29) from the free throw line.
Mercyhurst North East transfer David Brown was the only Blue Knight in double digits with 13 points. He entered the game averaging 20.4 points per game. Urbana shot 34.5 percent (20-58) from the floor, 30 percent (3-10) from behind the arc, and 80 percent (12-15) from the charity stripe.
Gannon remained undefeated at 5-0 with Thursday's victory. The Golden Knights increased their scoring margin to 29.2 and have won every game by at least 20 points. Urbana dropped to 1-13 with its sixth consecutive loss. Gannon returns to action Monday, December 22 against Lake Erie. Game time at the Hammermill Center is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
