ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon University women's soccer team tied Mercyhurst 0-0 in double overtime Tuesday night at Gannon University Field. The match was played in a driving sleet storm with winds of over 25 miles per hour at times.
Sophomore
Sabrina Chirco (Brampton, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) recorded her eighth shutout of the year to lead the Lady Knights. She made seven saves. Laker goalkeeper Rebecca Heintzman had two saves to stop GU. The two teams have now tied in each of their last three meetings over the past two seasons.
The tie kept Mercyhurst from clinching the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West. The Lakers have finished their regular season, going 10-4-4 overall and 8-2-4 in the conference.
Gannon (10-5-2, 8-3-2 PSAC) is still in contention for the top seed in the PSAC West. With a win Saturday at Indiana (Pa.), the Lady Knights would win the division. A tie would clinch a spot in the conference tournament.
GU will travel to IUP November 1 for a 2 p.m. match. The Crimson Hawks are also competing for position in the PSAC tournament. Slippery Rock and California (Pa.) are also in the hunt for the playoffs.
