EDINBORO, Pa. - The Gannon women's soccer team's drive to the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Western Division regular-season title hit a snag Tuesday afternoon at a windy Sox Harrison Stadium. Edinboro's Amber McLaughlin broke a 2-2 tie with 12:10 remaining in regulation as the Fighting Scots upset Gannon 3-2, gaining a split of the season series.
A strong wind was a big factor during Tuesday's action. Edinboro controlled play in the first 45 minutes with the wind at its back. The Fighting Scots scored in the fifth and 33rd minutes en route to a 2-0 halftime lead. The home team owned a 12-4 edge in shots during the first half.
As the teams switched directions in the second half, so did the momentum. Gannon needed only 3:41 with the wind in its favor to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Courtney Rowan (Mentor, Ohio/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) recorded her seventh goal of the season on a penalty kick.
Colleen Schwarz (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) tied the contest at two in the 62nd minute. The senior took a pass from
Amanda Sharbaugh (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) and buried a shot into the left corner from seven yards out.
Gannon seemed to have all the momentum in a second half which saw the Lady Knights out-shoot the Fighting Scots 10-3. However, McLaughlin converted one of Edinboro three second-half shots in the 78th minute to produce the upset, taking a rebound and scoring into an empty net.
Edinboro out-shot Gannon 15-14 while the Lady Knights had a 5-1 edge in corner kicks.
Sabrina Chirco (Brampton, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) recorded five saves in goal.
Gannon dropped to 9-5-1 overall and 7-3-1 in the PSAC West with Tuesday's loss. Edinboro improved to 6-9-1 overall and 2-8-1 in conference play. The Lady Knights return to action Saturday, October 25 with a huge PSAC Western Division affair at first-place Slippery Rock. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m.
