ERIE, Pa. - The Gannon University women's soccer team beat Clarion 4-0 Friday night at Gannon University Field. Freshman
Amanda Sharbaugh (Sarver, Pa./Knoch) scored a goal and sophomore
Sabrina Chirco (Brampton, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) recorded a shutout to lead the Lady Knights.
The win secured GU (9-4-1, 7-2-1) a winning record for the fifth time in program history. The Lady Knights last had a winning mark in 1999, when they went 12-7.
Gannon also moved back into first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West with the victory. They have 22 points, while Indiana (Pa.) has 21 on the season.
Heather Patterson (Baden, Pa./Ambridge Area) opened the scoring with a goal at the 5:20 mark.
Colleen Schwarz (Williamsville, N.Y./Williamsville South) assisted, as Patterson scored from close range. Sharbaugh scored in the 22nd minute, her team-leading 11th goal of 2008.
GU controlled much of the match, outshooting Clarion (3-10-2, 0-8-2) 16-7.
Julie Devus (Akron, Ohio/Green) and
Jamie Shadd (Cleveland, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) added goals in the second half to create the final margin. Devus was assisted by
Courtney Rowan (Mentor, Ohio/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin).
Katy Lynn (Brampton, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) provided the helper on Schadd's first goal of the year.
Chirco made one save for her seventh shutout of the season. She is third among PSAC goalkeepers in shutouts on the year.
The Lady Knights travel to Edinboro Tuesday, October 21. The match will kick off at 3 p.m.
