ERIE, PA – Gannon's strong first half gave the Golden Knights a multiple goal lead at the half against Salem. But a late five goal run doomed GU, as Gannon fell 14-12 to close day one of the WWPA Erie Classic. Gannon dropped to 6-12 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
-Gannon once again started the game with a strong performance on offense. After allowing the opening goal following a more than five minute stretch without scoring,
Molly Fehr (Erie, Pa./Villa Maria) (once) and
Jade Strickland (Santa Ana, Calif./Foothill) (twice) each dented the twine to give GU a 3-2 lead after a period.
-This is where the script changed from game one. The Golden Knights played a much more solid second period than in the McKendree contest. Gannon rattled off three straight goals from Bridgid Carmody, Fehr, and Fehr once again, who's hat trick tally put GU up 6-2.
-After Salem cut the lead to 6-4,
Emma O'Gorman (Johannesburg, South Africa/St Stithians College) found the net, and Strickland notched her third of the half with a tally with 19 seconds left before the break. GU led 8-5 at half.
-Salem controlled the third period, but GU remained on top heading into the fourth. Strickland's fourth brought the score to 11-9 with eight minutes to go
-GU seemed to start the fourth with momentum, when
Carissa Jones (Allison Park, Pa./North Allegheny) found the net to up the lead to 12-9. But that would be the last goal the Golden Knights would score. Salem rattled off five straight goals to close the game, taking it 14-12.
-
Molly Sebunia (Erie, Pa./McDowell) played the first three periods in goal, allowing nine goals and making six saves.
Izabella Trunzo (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) came on in the fourth, allowing five goals and making two stops.
