Golden Knights Win NCAA Div. II Atlantic/East Regional Preview in Playoff

Parrini paces Golden Knights with third-place finish

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's golf team needed a 37th hole but the Golden Knights came away as the champions of the NCAA Div. II Atlantic/East Regional Preview. The Golden Knights and Davis & Elkins each finished with a 5-over par 293 total after 18 holes at Whispering Woods Golf Club and on Tuesday followed that up with 298 totals to finish at 15-over par 591.
 
The two teams then headed back out to the 18th hole to settle the tie. Davis and Elkins had four pars on the par-4 411-yard hole. Kyle Westfall (Erie, Pa./Northwest Pennsylvania Collegiate Academy (Erie)), Rasmus Seppanen (Bastad, Sweden/Akademi Bastad Gymnasium) and Mattia Parrini (Verolengo, Italy/Verolengo) made par for the Golden Knights. Giovanni Delorenzi (Reggio Emilia, Italy/International School of Modena) drained a birdie putt to give the Golden Knights a one-stroke win 15 to 16.
 
West Liberty finished in third place after also shooting a 298 over the final 18 holes but the Hilltoppers totaled 299 in the opening round for a 597 (+21) total. The Gannon B team turned in an outstanding showing as well, finishing at 29-over 605 for sixth place.
 
The individual race also required a playoff after Aidan Talent of Davis & Elkins and West Liberty's Brogan Bennett finished at 3-under par 141. Talent rallied with the low round of the tournament, a 4-under par 68, then won the playoff over Bennett.
 
Gannon had five players finish in the top 10 from the two teams. Parrini led the way with a third-place finish, backing up Monday's 72 with a 1-under 71 on Tuesday. He was three-under over his final eight holes and finished at 1-under 143.
 
The B team had a pair of players finish as part of a three-way tie for fourth. Elijah Ruppert (Fleetwood, Pa./Brandywine Heights) and Jacob Wolak (Slippery Rock, Pa./Slippery Rock Area) each finished at 2-over 146, with Wolak climbing 12 spots on Tuesday thanks to a 72. Delorenzi and Wareham finished in a tie for tenth at 5-over 149 after shooting identical rounds of 73-76.    
 
The Golden Knights now await official word of qualifying for the NCAA Div. II Atlantic/East Regional. The field for the regional will be announced on Friday, April 25 with the Golden Knights hosting the regional at Whispering Woods Golf Club on May 8-10.
