Jackson, Melnyk Named Gannon Student-Athletes of the Week

ERIE, Pa. – Patrick Jackson (Harpers Ferry, WV/Spring Mills High), a member of the men's wrestling team, and women's swimmer Mariia Melnyk (Kyiv, Ukraine/Education Center Optima) have been selected as the Gannon University Student-Athletes of the Week for the week of November 9. This marks the tenth week honoring Gannon's Student-Athlete of the Week and encompasses events through Sunday.

The men's wrestling team competed in the Bob Del Rosa Ohio Open hosted by Case Western Reserve on Sunday. Jackson picked up his second first-place finish of the season while competing at 184 lbs.

A national qualifier at 174 lbs. a year ago, the redshirt sophomore is now 7-0 on the young season after moving up a weight class. He posted a 7-1 decision in the quarterfinals before moving into the finals with a 19-3 technical fall in the semifinals. He won by medical forfeit in the championship bout.

Melnyk delivered a record-setting performance while leading the women's swimming team in a loss at Case Western Reserve. The freshman from Kyiv, Ukraine broke the Gannon program record in the 100-yard freestyle, posting a an NCAA-B cut time of 50.80. She also won the 100-yard backstroke (57.46).

Additionally, Melnyk swam a leg of the winning 400-yard medley relay team (3:53.87). In the process the relay team once again set a school record.
