OBERLIN, OH – Twice the competition, twice the success. Gannon swept their Saturday dual meet with wins over Oberlin (182-105) & Malone (213-44). Gannon has improved its dual meet record to 4 wins and 2 losses for the season.
Right out of the gate, the Golden Knights rocketed to the top of the leaderboard. Juliana Romero (Bogotá, Columbia/Colegio pureza de Maria) Castro, Chinyere Mgbemena (Harare, Zimbabwe/Eaglesvale), Hailey Wills (Cleves, Ohio/Seton) & Alex Pannemann (Clinton Twp., Mich./Chippewa Valley) took home gold in the 400 Medley Relay (4:09:24). Maddie Myers followed up with a first place finish in the next event (1650 freestyle) with a time of 18:25:84.Â
Beating her seed time by over a second, Roaa Farag (Heliopolis, Egypt/Nermin Ismail) was victorious in the 200 yard freestyle with a time of 1:58:61. She was the only swimmer to go sub two minutes in the event. Freshman Isabella Kling (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) then edged out the next closest competitor by 15 hundredths of a second in the 100 yard backstroke to give the Golden Knights another win. Kling also was victorious in the 200 IM (2:18:66) later in the meet.Â
More wins came for GU in the 100 yard breaststroke and 200 yard butterfly. Mdbemena, in a photo finish, took home the gold in the 100 (1:10:86). Emily Hedges (Peachtree Corners, Ga./St Pius X Catholic) won the 200 by over eight seconds (2:12:62).Â
In the 100 freestyle, Lily Cunningham (Lavista, Neb./Papillion-La Vista) (55.44) slid past Myers (55.91) to earn first. Senior Chenay Date Line (Johannesburg, South Africa/Crawford College Sandton) kept the freestyle success rolling with her 5:25:26 in the 500 yard win.Â
Just as it started, the meet ended with a Gannon team win. Pannemann, Cunningham, Farag & Irati Arzalluz (Lasarte-Oria, Spain/Santo Tomas Lizeoa) were first in the 400 freestyle relay to close things out.Â
The Golden Knights return home to the Carneval Athletic Pavilion Pool for senior night on Friday, January 24th to host rival Edinboro. The meet begins at 6:00 pm.
