GANNON WOMEN'S PREVIEW
The Gannon women's cross country team hopes to turn in a strong performance at the NCAA Division II Atlantic Regional Championships in Lock Haven on Saturday.
Coach
Rob Ahrens' Golden Knights placed 10th in the PSAC Championships after being selected 1 coach
Rob Ahrens' Golden Knights 14th in the preseason coaches' poll. As a result, Gannon beat expectations by four positions.
Freshman
Emily Bowers (Silver Creek, N.Y./Silver Creek) earned All-PSAC honors with an 18th-place performance at the PSACs. That continued her strong first season with the Golden Knights. She was followed by
Megan Ickes (Greenville, Pa./Greenville) (51st, 24:16.0),
Elissa Scheel (Medina, Ohio/Highland) (55th, 24:19.8),
Taylor Friello (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) (95th, 25:23.8),
Brooke Wissinger (Fombell, Pa./Riverside) (111th, 25:57.6), and
Jessica McCracken (Limestone, Pa./Clarion-Limestone Area) (115th, 26:06.8).
Ahrens praised Ickes and McCracken for their performance in the PSACs as both showed marked improvement throughout the season.
Gannon placed 13th among 25 teams aT the 2023 Atlantic Regional.
Cait O'Rourke (Orchard Park, N.Y./Orchard Park) (20th, 21:53.2) and
Emma Steele (Ambridge, Pa./Eden Christian Academy) (24th, 22:02.1) claimed all-region honors with Top 30 finishes, but both graduated.
Octavia Kosnik (Union City, Pa./Union City) (100th, 23:45.6) and
Taylor Friello (Erie, Pa./Mercyhurst Prep) (114th, 24:04.8) were the only runners who ran in the 2023 race who returned for 2024.
Because the Lock Haven course is mostly flat, Ahrens hopes that several of his runners can hit personal records as the young team builds for 2025.
Gannon has entered eight runners in the race. Seven will run.
