Annual Maroon-Gold Wrestleoffs Set for Sunday

ERIE, Pa. – The Gannon men's wrestling team will is fast approaching the start of the second season with Tom Boyd at the helm. The long-time assistant turned head coach will have one last chance to assess his lineup when Gannon holds the annual Maroon-Gold Wrestleoffs on Sunday, September 27.

The action will get underway at 9:00 a.m. at the Recreation and Wellness Center. The public is invited to attend.

Injuries have forced Boyd and his staff to limit this year's wrestleoffs. Fourteen wrestlers will take to the mat on Saturday, with the competition featuring matches at 125, 141, 149, and 197 lbs.

At 125 lbs., a trio of redshirt freshmen will do battle with redshirt sophomore Hunter Robison (Edinboro, Pa./Saegertown), a former transfer from VMI. The trio of redshirt freshmen are Jordan Escarra (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay), Logan Sallot (Erie, PA/McDowell High School), a transfer from Lock Haven, and Kenny Schmitz (Hamburg, N.Y./Hamburg). They look to fill the hole left by NCAA qualifier Jose Diaz (Valparaiso, Ind./Wheeler).

Four wrestlers will also compete at 141 and 149 lbs. Redshirt juniors Caleb Chaves (Odenton, Md./Arundel) and Chase McLaughlin (Jamestown, Pa./Jamestown Area), redshirt sophomore Jacob Wright (Arnold, Md./Mount Saint Joseph) and redshirt freshman Brock Christian (Perry, Ohio/Perry) are all in the mix at 141 lbs. Chaves is the incumbent while McLaughlin was the starter at 133 lbs. in 2022-23.

The 149 lb. competitors bring plenty of experience to the mat. Hayden Butterfield (Erie, Pa./McDowell) is a graduate student moving down from 157 lbs., with Carson Filer (Mercer, Pa./Mercer Area) and Kenny Kiser (Meadville, Pa./Saegertown) redshirt juniors. Kiser is a transfer from Army. Redshirt freshman Isaac Piatek (Garner, N.C./Cleveland) rounds out the foursome. They look to fill the role of Jimmy Ryan (Staten Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell), an NCAA qualifier.

Finally, the 197 lb. field will feature Shane Davidson (Almond, N.Y./Wellsville), a redshirt freshman, and Eli Reese (Sarver, Pa./Knoch). Reese is a redshirt junior who is moving down from heavyweight. He was starting heavyweight two years ago.

Gannon opens the 2024-25 season the following weekend competing in the Mount Union Invitational on Saturday, November 2.
